One of the best days we have ever had cruising. We took the 12:10 train on Flam railway (station is right next to port) up to Vatnahalsen ( the train stops at a wonderful waterfall on the way up where you can get out to take pictures) . At Vatnahalsen we watched the zip liners speeding down the valley from a viewing platform then walked the 3k down the winding roads to the bottom of the zip wire - and were rewarded by more stunning views of waterfalls- before collecting bikes at Kardall ( which is the end of the zipwire- you can’t miss it) . We then cycled the 17 k back down to Flam through some of the most stunning scenery I have ever seen in my life! Just wonderful and pretty much down hill all the way ( a few short inclines which I pushed the bike up) so was just free wheeling really 🤣. Booked on a site called Norways Best- it was the “Flam Railway, Hike and Bike” package- about £65pp- so much cheaper than the ship and the best fun ever! So exhilarating! For Travellers with less mobility there is a fabulous E-Mobility cabin at the port where you can hire cute little mini electric cars to take you up the mountain road ( no idea on price for those but an amazingly accessible way to go up the mountain and see the beauty of this place ). Do book the train /package asap though as its so popular and it only goes a handful of times a day- you can just get a straightforward return ticket but the cycle down seemed too much fun to miss- and we made the right decision! Best day ever! Noway scores 10/10 for us today ♥️🇳🇴. Also you can go another stop further than we did, to Myrdal, and cycle or walk down from there too- which lots of people did. Good luck! 🚴♀️

The ship had sold out but we were able to buy tickets at the station for a much cheaper price. The waterfall was by far the best surprise of this tour. It’s a must do if your visiting this port.

Flam railway is a must do and the waterfall half way up a real wow moment. Cycling back the 21km is really for the more fit, confident cyclists as numerous places have steep, windy gravel paths. We would have used the train both ways if we have known.

Be sure to take an excursion that includes the Flam railway and a lunch at Fletchers Hotel in Voss. Superb.

Took the train up & down the mountain. Great views & picture taking opportunties. The ship seems to dock right in town & the train station is about 100 yards away. Great meal & beer at the local microbrewery.

Our visit to Flaam was excellent for such a small place there is a lot to do top of the list has to be the railway. We did a return trip but I would be keen to do the bike ride down next time. There is also the floating sauna which includes a swim very near the ship! The museum was very good and I would have liked time to wander into flaam old town. Looking forward to coming back here soon.

One of our best days. Flaam is tiny, less than 100 inhabitants and can accommodate only one cruise ship at a time. Spectacular beauty of Norway fjords area in full display here. Definitely need to book a ship excursion here or something on your own because there is nothing to do in Flaam. On our own we booked the "Norway in a Nutshell" trip which is recommended by tour guide Rick Steves. Pricey (over $300 for the two of us) but worth it with 2 hour boat cruise two fjords, bus trip on Norway steepest road, train trip on the Bergen to Oslo railroad and finally another train back Flaam. The last train to Flaam is the steepest railroad in the world and an engineering marvel. Trip takes six hours and scenery is...fjord, waterfalls, rivers, meadows...is spectacular. This was my wife's favorite day.

We did the ship's tour on the railway - sit on the right hand side of the railway as it leaves Flam (facing into the mountain), but when you switch over to the second train for the onward journey, switch over to sitting on the left. That way you get the best views on each leg. If you don't do that, then you end up with a few hours of effectively blank mountainside. It was very scenic though. Flam itself is tiny, so don't expect to find much to do in the actual port.
