We disembarked in Athens and spent a couple of days on our own. We had a great time!

We didn't need an paid excursion for this. We just walked to the train station (1 euro per person) and took it in to the city then used the simple map that we got from the ship to circle around and see the acropolis and all the little sites along the way. Long day of walking but a ton of fun. There were a ton of cab drivers trying to get us to spend the whole day with them when we got off the boat.

Did hop on hop off bus and saw all the main attractions in Piraeus and Athens. Buses back to ship were few and far between

We arrived the night before the cruise and near the Parthenon there's a row of restaurants and nightlife. The day of the cruise we got up early and viewed the Parthenon which was well worth it but be prepared to climb its steep! You need about 2-3 hours to do this.

Stayed two days before at Hotel Attalos, great hotel with a nice breakfast and amazing views of The Acropolis from our room and the rooftop bar

Athens, Greece. The port is Piraeus a few miles from the city of Athens. We made the mistake of taking a taxi to the Acropolis. If you do not book any excursions while in Athens, I recommend taking a taxi to the metro station in Piraeus and then hopping on a train which will take you to the main terminal in Athens a few blocks from the Old Parliament House, and then it’s a 15–20-minute walk uphill to the Acropolis. A roundtrip on the train cost 6.40-Euro, whereas the one-way taxi ride cost us 35-Euro and he didn’t take credit cards. Once off the train back in Piraeus we walked back to the ship and stopped at several bakeries along the way for our new favorite pastry….. When you are in Greece you have to have the Spanakopita – spinach and feta inside phyllo dough (with melted butter on top) served warm. It is beyond delicious, and very affordable – under 3.20 Euro.

My 80 year old mother got food poisoning on her last cruise and after lying on the floor for hours managed to call 911and was administered IV's after being rushed to infirmary. She wrote letters and try calling them after cruise and too date has heard nothing back from them at all....ever.
