We have plans to spend a night in the city vs returning to the ship for the overnight stay in Livorno. After doing the math, it was actually slightly less expensive to to pay for round trip transportation from the cruise port to town just once and share the costs of an AirBnB for 4 people than it was to go back to the ship the first night and pay for transportation a second time the next day. Of course there are meals to consider, but we think it will be a fun adventure nonetheless.

we even stayed overnight in Florence. As a courtesy, we did tell Azamara before we left the ship

There is no curfew for overnights. However, if you do not plan to return until the next day, it is advisable to inform the ship as so in case of any emergency they know where you are and how to contact you.

I second what DaddyBill said. We also decided to stay the night in Florence. We decided this because I felt it was too much hassle to get in and out of Livorno 4 times. To get to Florence with reasonable cost, we’d have to take the port shuttle into town, then take either a taxi or bus to the train station, then take a train to Florence. A convenient but expensive option is to hire a private car to pick you up at the ship and drive you 1:20 to Florence. Most drivers want €400 for this, one way! Or you can negotiate with the taxi drivers in Livorno and see if you can get a better rate, too much of a gamble for me. For our cruise, we wouldn’t arrive in Florence until 12:30. Considering the last train left at 9:30 that gave us 9 hours. Sounds good except it’s the same hassle to get back to the ship, really late, only to get up and do that rigmarole over again.

I asked this same question to my sailing group on Facebook. Several people experienced with Norwegian Cruise Lines said when they’ve stayed overnight, at other ports, with NCL, they had a 1am cut off time to board the ship. Then people could board again around 6am. Perhaps rules are different for each cruise line, or perhaps the port matters? Sorry if I just threw a wrench into your planning.
