Rome was our starting point. We flew in day prior to departure. Spent one half day in Rome battling the crowds. Very OVERTOURISTED. Trevi Fountain was a joke. Have never seen this many people there before. Im retrospect I would just do direct from Rome airport to Civitavecchia and knock around there for the arrival day. It looks OK to me , just be sure to get a decent hotel so you can rest up before your cruise starts.

We booked a de-bark tour of Rome partly because we werre staying only overnight and we were able to see all of the major historic sites in a comfortable motor coach and guide. We entered the Coluseum and walked around. Awesome. And we went into the Vatican City and St Peters Basicilia - do not miss this. The Sistine Chapel tour was hurried and the Chapel itself was anti-climatic, except for what it stood for. If you have time to spend, gain entrance into the Vatican Museum. The displays there are awesome.
