We did the cruise ship express train excursion to Rome. Very fast, direct train which took 45 minutes. Once there we had all day to explore Rome on our own. I’ve been before and only thing I never got to see was inside the Colosseum so I pre-booked tickets to avoid the queues. Fantastic place and highly recommend a visit. Also, if you are limited for time please pre-book to avoid wasting time queuing. You can queue for hours in Rome to see attractions. We had plenty of time left to see Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon, St Peters Square, Spanish Steps and many other places we have visited before. We covered a lot of miles and all on foot. Rome is our favourite city to visit. It’s a must if you dock here.

Rome. My goodness...you just have to go. We booked a tour of the Coliseum and Palantine Hill with a good guide. Larger group (around 25 folks). I will say visiting Rome on foot is a lot but we loved it and kept up. There were people from our group who bailed on the tour because it was physically trying so you need to be in pretty good shape to climb around the ruins! We spent 2 days here after the cruise and we should have planned for a week. It was gorgeous and we barely scratched the surface. I would definitely plan for at least 3 full days in Rome pre or post cruise. It was so amazing.

Took a tour with limo in Rome. The tour operator spoke good English and was very knowledgeable. He navigated the streets in a way that left me in awe. (Crazy drivers and narrow streets) The coliseum was supper crowded, but it was amazing. We had online tickets for the Vatican and you could spend hours going through the museums. The only part I didn’t like was being herded like cattle through the Sistine Chapel. I feel like I barely saw it. Our guide asked us what we wanted for lunch and took us to this restaurant that allowed all of us to have what we liked. (Pizza, salad, pasta) There is an incredible amount to see and I feel like I great overview. I did throw a coin in the Trevi fountain so I’m sure I’ll be back one day

Booked the Roma Express train which took about 45 minutes and it was a pleasant train journey. St Peter's square is a few minutes walk from the station and your first impression will be WOW. We visited all the main sites by walking and enjoyed every minute of it. My watch said that I had done 22,000 steps. Some areas are very busy with tourists which made me think that during the high holiday season this may be a problem though in May it was OK.

Having been twice to this port, both times I went to Rome. My recommendation on the cheapest way to get there is by train. You can purchase tickets from the tourist information, and a good 10 min walk to the station and you can get a direct train to Rome (1hr). Plus your free to return when you like. Rome is beautiful. Easy to get around on the open top bus which do a drop on drop off service. That way you get to see the main attractions. There's also many other ways to get around, Segway etc. The only reason I am not giving it a 5 star is because it is very expensive to eat on the main high street, so I advise you look for a little restaurant behind the Vatican wall which will be less than half the price. I learnt this the second time we visited.

We left early by train (quick taxi ride to train station) and met a guide that took us on a 6 hour tour of Rome. We saw the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basilica, stopped for Gelato and Pizza to die for, and enjoyed the countryside of Rome back to Civitavecchia from the train window.

Too bad Civitavecchia is the gateway to Rome! The town itself is quaint with great restaurants and shopping. It is a easy walk from the ship to town, they may even offer a shuttle. If you get the chance, give Civitavecchia a chance 😊
