Gorgeous city. You MUST go to the Opera House - incredible! Consider NOT going on the tour to Ackerman Fortress; wander the beautiful city instead. Go to the Market. Even if you take a taxi, it will be cheaper than taking their optional tour. We took a public bus and walked back. Definitely go to the catacombs.

Odessa was definitely the highlight of the tour. It has quite a Mediterranean feel and some very fine buildings. The transfiguration cathedral was beautiful. We visited the Piroz market with the chef, which was quite an experience. Lots of tastings and quite a bit (again) of hanging around in the heat. The meat section was a revelation - no refrigeration and not a fly anywhere! Wouldn't buy my meat there though!

The steps and the promanade at the top makes for a delightful introduction to Odessa. The architecture is outstanding throughout the main streets with important buildings, but also in the side streets and houses and apartment buildings. Don't forget to look up.

Pleasantly surprised by the waterfront parks and promenade. City was safe and clean. Excursions were well organized.
