@enjoyurdaysmile And yet Carnival curiously includes it as a stop on their Western Caribbean itineraries. They’re going to feel pretty silly now that you’ve set everyone straight.

there is rarely a need to use other than US dollars in any Caribbean port, but make sure you have small bills since change could be in local currency.

you get a better exchange rate if you use pesos and it's a show of respect to use the money of the country that you are in.

They take dollars and give change in dollars. If they say they don’t, walk out and they’ll quickly find a way to make it work. If they try to give you pesos as change, tell them no. Also, the best exchange rate will be if you use a credit card (Visa or MasterCard as AMEX and Discover are not well accepted) that has no foreign exchange fee and having them run it in pesos. Get a receipt too in case they play games with the charge so you can dispute it with your credit card company. It’s rare, but we’ve had it happen where they “forgot” and tried to run the peso amount as US dollars.

@enjoyurdaysmile the Caribbean is not a country! Mexico is a country bordering the Caribbean. Having said that, you can use USD in most all Caribbean ports along side their currency. Just be aware that if you pay with USD, you will still get change back in their currency ( Pecos) etc.

If using credit cards check the country you are going to. When we went to Honduras there was a large tax if using a credit card. I think it was like 18%.

Dollars are accepted in Mexico tourist areas and easiest for you. However, you are at the mercy of the vendor’s exchange rate which is always in their favor. Sometimes you will see prices posted in Pesos and Dollars and typically the dollar is priced higher. If you can get hold of some Pesos to bring it may save you a little.

if you have some, you c;an definitely bring them; but otherwise you're going to find that with the exchange rate and the locals knowledge of what the tourists should be charged, you'll likely not save any money at all
