speaking as someone who has never gone that far out of Costa Maya, I would think the way to do this would be to book the cab for the entire day so you are guaranteed a ride back and you don't have to worry about someone Shifty for the return leg of your trip

it is really safe...we either take a cab or rent a golf cart...and take off...we travel to nearby towns...shop ..eat..drink....the real town outside port is about 5 miles away...to dar to walk...even when your drunk..lolhave fun

We just returned from cruise and booked a day resort I found on trip advisor https://costamayabeachresort.com/ felt sketchy and looked like we were going to a bad area but once we arrived it was amazing and very secure. Will totally go back if we port there again.
