Since Maya Chan was suggested, I will tell you this. It's hard to get a reservation there even 45 days before your cruise. You probably need to ask for reservations like 6 months in advance. Also it is worth noting that if your cruise will be in the summer, they close all summer for hurricane season. The exact closed dates for that are on their website.

There's no relaxing when a vendor is approaching you literally every 30 seconds to buy something. You say "no thank you" and they still keep trying to push their junk on you. If you find a good one, let me know!

as the comedian on the Allure called it "Close To Maya" with its 1/4 - 1/2 mile walk from the ship. Huge tourist trap, if we ever go back the we're staying on the ship

I say take your beach day in roatan (any and all beaches are awesome) or in cozumel at playa mia beach or even nassau or grand cayman. costa maya is only good for three things: pick a good ship-led excursion, the walking-distance aviary if you like birds, or a good day to stay on board and enjoy less crowded bars and pools.

We jumped on a cab after paying a dude $35 a person for open bar at mahahual beach(about a $15 cab ride and much cleaner than the port beach). A little sketched out at first, but everything turned out great and even saw other cruisers from our ship there. Was able to get a cab back to the port later on in the afternoon. I'm pretty sure they lost money on us that day. :)

When we went there we walked through the cruise port and rented a golf cart for 65 dollars for the day and went all over the place. Rented from red shirt golf cart guys. Get your cart and go to the lighthouse.
