If you’re on a closed loop cruise (leaving and returning to the same US port) all you need is a birth certificate and ID to board but if something happens medically or if you miss the ship at a port getting back to the US will be a nightmare without a passport. It’s best to have it but not necessary.

I just got back from Aruba in October. I don't remember being asked for my passport, however I did need my Sea Pass and a photo ID (I used my license). It's always a good idea to have a passport with you on the cruise just in case you need it, but the ship staff usually tell you when a country needs you to bring your passport off the ship. Some lines don't even do that anymore, they just collect your passport in the beginning of the trip and return it after the last port. They do this to streamline the customs process in foreign ports.

If any of the ports you dock at on your cruise. The cruise line should notify you the night before you dock. As someone mentioned if you have one take if with you cause you never know when it might be required!

livelife said it perfectly. And we just leave our passports in the safe, as recommended by cruise line. Your room card shows you are on the cruise. Keep photo ID with you.

We have been to Aruba several times on Carnival and never needed a passport. If your cruise is round trip and leaving and returning to the same port in the US you will not need a passport at all. We have them just in case something happens, you will not be able to fly back to the States.
