Bought a day pass from BahamasDayPass.com and spent $20 to spend the day at the Grand Lucayan resort. The main part of the hotel remains closed due to the hurricane, but the beach is open as is the infinity pool. Great way to escape the crowds from the ship, and just a 20 minute taxi ride from the port.

If you don't book an excursion this port sucks! Worst ever in all of my 5 cruises. My wife has a bad leg so I didn't book an excursion. Figure I take a Taxi around. Forget about it. Bunch of thief! They wanted to overcharge us to drive us around. Excursion is a must!

Freeport is definitely the worst port I’ve been to. The port is very industrial and you will not get that “island vibe” that you get from most any other port. If you don’t book an excursion then there’s really no need to get off the ship unless you want to hop off to grab a souvenir real quick.

Boat pulls up the shopping district only a few feet from the boat. Excellent Caribbean food. Good excursions but the boat only stays about 5 hours and it takes an hour to get off the boat.

Freeport was not my favourite, I'll probably never go there ever again. as soon as you step off the boat you are bombarded with people trying to sell you stuff and they get mad of you say no, we had to rudely walk away from a few of the locals because it was borderline harassment how they were acting. then we took a taxi to port lucaya and it got worse! my husband was bombarded with locals trying to sell him DRUGS of all kinds, like these people were following him saying they had "party favors" for sale, he said no numerous times and they would ask me well why not?!? like seriously? because we don't want to buy drugs in a different country....we don't want to buy drugs in general! leave us alone! we bought a few shirts and necklaces for our kids back home and the next guy started yelling at us because we "bought crap and what he was selling was good quality" when it all looked like the same cheap "made in China" souvenirs, we ended up going to the beach and were offered drugs again numerous times (I think because we are a young couple) but we made the most of it and enjoyed the beach which was beautiful but slightly ghetto still the locals kinda ruin it being so pushy and rude. we witnessed locals leaving trash all over the beach and then yelling at tourist to not leave trash behind....I just wasn't impressed, if we ever return to freeport we will get a excursion to go to a resort and have a beach day OR just not get off the ship. beware of freeport they will try as hard as they can to swindle you out of every penny you have. an excursion is the way to go, you won't miss anything in the shops really....what you can buy at the small shops in port is the same crap you can buy in port lucaya with less hassle because the sketchy people we came across were not allowed in the port area.

Many people do not like this port because it is an industrial area, we loved it! You can easily hop in a taxi and it will take you to the main city of Lucayan for only about $5. We booked a snorkel and catamaran excursion and had a wonderful time. They picked us up in an open bus and brought us to Lucayan for our adventure. We even had time after to visit the shops in the straw market. Great day! I will add that our friends went to the beach and it was full of coral, so bring water shoes if you choose to do that.
