Is this a port that requires an excursion? Or can you get off the ship and walk around the port itself ?

Ketchikan offers both depending on the experience you desire. Local shops and restaurants are plentiful with Creek Street providing both in an atmosphere a visitor would expect in Alaska. The town is also a great place to learn of native Alaskan culture at the Totem Heritage Center, catch the Lumberjack Show, or see a bald eagle at the wildlife sanctuary. All sites are a short walking distance from the ship.

You can walk around. Check the internet for a walking tour map. Creek Street is a destination.Bruce Locksmythe_

It's fun just to walk around, lots to look at and if you really want to walk there is a lot to see beyond the immediate port area. We walked around on our own.
