Washing Machine & Dryers on Ships

I recently read that the new Viking Star will have self help washing machines & dryers. If washing machines and dryers were available on more ships would you use them on cruises over 7 days?

On a recent long cruise I did use the machines & dryers about 6 times. It took little time and the powder was included in the cost of the washing. Dryers were complimentary so if you had articles that got wet, you could dry them free of charge. The ship even had an iron.

Normally on a vacation I don't like to be stuck spending time doing laundry. The machines are a big help to families, though.

What are your thoughts.

Absolutely. It would allow me to pack less. Leaving more room to bring back duty free alcohol.

I have used the washers & dryers on CC before. They were not expensive, but not free either. Brought my own soap & dryer sheets.

Good idea JustMe. I bring the little pods with me and use one for the sink load. I'll look for the packets next time I am in Target.

For rinsing items in the sink a few years ago I found Tide Sink packets in the Sample size section of Target. They are made for just a sink full of suds. I have taken them with me on ships, but ended up being lazy and just sending items to the Laundry.

We use pods when we travel. There's no danger of spilling.

We didn't need soap suds as the machines on HAL Amsterdam included soap. Good thing aqnd those pods do weigh a bit. On the other hand they are very convenient. We brought a few along just to use in our room's bathroom. The sink unfortunately are very small.

We get free laundry service on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, but we'll be sailing on Carnival for the first time. They do have launderettes onboard, so I'm taking my laundry pods and dryer sheets.

We get free laundry service now on Carnival. It is a big help. Socks take a long time to dry without using a dryer.

We have heard there are some ships without self service laundry rooms. Hard to imagine that on longer voyages. We have used those facilities many, many times. Since my wife is the laundry boss she should be posting here but she doesn't do that. Anyway, "Laundry Room Wars" have been a humorous subject for years. One time we were dining with the C.D., when someone mentioned the laundry rooms, he said, "there are three things you don't discuss on ships." 1. Politics 2. Religion 3. Laundry, LOL.

Laundry done for you is pretty expensive. Fortunately, we have earned the free laundry perk on two of the three lines we use, HAL and Princess. Princess's perk package is much more generous than HAL's in that we have had free laundry and quite a bit free internet time on Princess for years, yet we just earned free laundry on HAL at the end of our last cruise, but in 20 more days of sailing with them it will be 300 total days, still no free internet with HAL either, pretty stingy line. With Regent we have another 80 days sailing before free laundry but do get free dry cleaning, and unlimited internet.

Sure, we've washed clothes on longer cruises. It’s nice to have that option available if you need it.
