How Formal is Formal?

We like to use Cruise ships as transportation when we cross long distances (like the Pacific or the Atlantic). Our timing requires us to go from the USA to Europe in early June and the QM2 seems to be the best (most affordable) option.

We see on their web site that formal wear is required when entering the main dining room on specific nights. If I get a sports jacket and tie, will that be good enough?

Many people on Cunard like to dress to impress, and enjoy the formality.

This is a British heritage line, so it is much more traditional than other cruise lines.

We are heading out on Cunard in a few weeks, and husband has his tuxedo all ready, with a few different bow ties for the two gala nights. My gowns match the themes.

Husband will wear a jacket and tie for the other evenings.

Well, if you are not into ballroom dancing, you can probably just go down to dinner, and then back out, and no one will say anything with a tie and jacket.

Have a great time!

was on Cunard cruise years ago. For formal nights men mostly wore business suits or sports coats +/- ties. Women dressed nicely cocktail dresses pants suits. Some over the top ie.e. tuxedos gowns.

I copied this from the page.

Formal suits

Formal suits are only required on board a transatlantic cruise on Gala Evenings and, even then, there’s no pressure to dress up if you don’t want to. Most of our guests, however, look forward to the opportunity to put on a tuxedo for one night and channel their James Bond alter-ego.

Either a formal suit or nice dinner jacket, dress pants, shirt, and tie of any color will do just fine for Gala Evenings. And if you want to embrace the theme in your outfit choice, you’re more than welcome to do that too. We’ve had many gentlemen on board who’ve given their partners a run for their money when it comes to their Gala Evening attire.
