Get off in Alexandria and rejoin ship in Port Said

Hi,
We have two nights in Egypt coming up in October, and since Cairo is 2.5 - 3 hours one way from the port, we're thinking about leaving the ship in Alexandria, and staying at a hotel that night, and then meeting the ship at the next port (Port Said) the next evening. That way we can maximize our sightseeing and minimize the long travel days. Has anyone done this successfully? Is there any trouble with the cruise line (Norwegian)? Any fines, etc.? I'm aware that it's against policy, but people miss the all aboard times all the time, so the only difference I see is that I know I'm missing the boat ahead of time. Please share your personal knowledge and/or experience on this.

Thanks so much!

I feel like this is a bad plan. But ive been accused of being a bit paranoid...

That could make for an interesting excursion - scavenger hunt to find possessions removed from ship...

Definitely recommend you check directly with cruise line - there are some excursions that afford passengers the opportunity to leave/rejoin ship (such as Holy Lands) and they can grant approval at certain ports (we got approval from HAL to do this in Canada) where allowed by local law.

Enjoy your trip and please do update us on the outcome.

Check with the Egyptian authorities. Some countries will have different rules for cruisers who are considered day visit vs over night stay. Immigration views the two as different. You should also check directly with NCL because if they do not know and you stay intentionally your stuff might just be left at the port.

One post either didn’t make it or was removed

Your other post was delicious.Wink You are going to get yourself in trouble with that kind of advice (not surprised).

As for the topic of this thread: you know the policy, but it wouldn't hurt to ask IF it is possible. You could call the cruiseline and say you are considering this cruise and wondered if this was authorized.

Are you going to have your passport with you at all times ?

I do believe that it is an issue, and please do not attempt to do it.

Lynn is wonderful

Ya know what, do what you want. You yourself stated that you know it goes against policy, and that policy is in place for a reason. Hey, you’re an American and you pay your taxes. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do. But go ahead, do what’s convenient for you, and please, do tell us the outcome.

what happened to my other post on this thread ?

Both ports are in Egypt, so I don’t see customs being an issue??

Ok, here is the difference as I see it. If you miss the ship unintentionally, you would have to deal with a port agent and make your travel arrangements to the next port. If you intentionally miss the ship, in short, I don’t think it’s allowed. There might be an issue with customs upon your arrival home. You can’t just hop on and off when you like. If anything were to happen to you, the ship might ( would ) be held liable. There are no waivers to sign. So IMHO, don’t do it. I forget which maritime law you would be violating.
