Foreign Transaction Fees for Onboard Credit Card Charges

We're from the United states and will be enjoying a Mediterranean Cruise in late May, 2025 aboard the Sun Princess.

Wanting to know whether Princess Cruise Lines (or others) charge a "Foreign Trans action Fee" for onboard credit card purchases while on the ship? We expect this charge while onshore, but wanted to know specifically about purchases while on the ship itself while in the Mediterranean.

Though I don't have a concrete answer directly about your cruise, I do have a in general answer. First it will depend on where the on board final bill charges are processed, if it will be the Santa Clarita, CA headquarters offices of the cruise line or 1 of their foreign soil satellite offices handling the billing. Then even if it's the US based headquarters you might still have currency conversion fees if the ship is primarily billing in Euros, rather than US Dollars. You will get more concise answers from another social media site run by Meta on their fan based rollcall pages for your sailing or the direct company page.

Your best defense is, if you have the time, search out and apply for a no foreign or currency conversion fee credit cards like many of the Capital Ones, Bank of America, or Amex offerings. If no time or the card will not have a credit limit level you think you need for the trip just consider get whatever the ship based currency is from your bank and traveling with that.

Good question. I would call the credit card company directly and ask. I have a card that I know DOES NOT charge the foreign fee, but I never used it aboard a ship. A vendor in Barcelona is easy to see where the transaction occurred (supposedly). But aboard the Sun Princess ??? Interesting. Best wishes tracking down your answer.

I've talked with Princess Cruise Lines and unfortunately they couldn't provide an answer. I'm hoping that someone who has previously cruised overseas could provide an answer.

Following. I’d like to know this answer as well.
