Euro Currency

Hello all:

I am going from the United States to a 7 day Western Mediterranean cruise (all eurozone ports). I wanted to know how many Euros I should bring? Does everyone take credit and debit card (AMEX/MC)? Is there a way to get a prepaid card to avoid foreign transaction fees? Also I tried to find a bank or currency exchanges here in the states that matches the exchange rate listed in the markets, but I couldn't. Any suggestions where to exchange currency? Thanks to all that respond.

Thank you all for the info (especially about pay toilets). I guess a bit of cash and a good plastic. Thanks again and I hope you all have good cruises!

Sorry, 1 more tip on the cash question. Many toilets require .50 or a euro to enter, so always have a few coins on hand!!

Amen. My late wife & I were in Kenya circa 1986...a storeowner asked if we could use another card since AMX were slow payers.

Likewise in Belize, circa 1992, the little lodge we stayed at added a surcharge if AMX was used.

Leave the AMEX at home...almost useless in Europe. On our May cruise I don't think 1 place accepted my wife's AMEX card, stick to MC or VISA

Thanks! I guess things are different than my friends tell me. Hearsay isn’t as reliable as actual experience. How much do you recommend for the original poster?

Actually, I disagree with AuntPinkie....just got back from a France/Spain cruise and cash is always good. We took 50 euros per port for cafes and such. For big items, credit cards.

Actually, we have heard from our trveling friends, that credit is the preferred method. I'm not sure the amount of cash you will need, but probably not a lot.

Usually banks offer the best rate on currency exchanges ... at least here in Canada. Back in the day you would have a whack of travelers cheques but these days most touristy areas do take credit cards. I don't think debit cards are good across the pond though.
