MSC to Host Naming Ceremony for MSC Seashore on Ocean Cay
MSC Cruises announced that it will host the official naming ceremony of its new flagship vessel, MSC Seashore, on November 18 at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. This ceremony will mark the first naming of a ship held on a cruise line's private island. The event will be held prior to the start of MSC Seashore’s inaugural U.S. cruise season which begins on November 20, 2021, from PortMiami.
As with every new MSC Cruises ship, famed actress Sophia Loren will serve as MSC Seashore's Godmother. This is the 16th MSC Cruises ship of which she has held this title.
In conjunction with MSC Seashore’s naming ceremony, this celebration will serve as the formal inauguration of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. The private island in the Bahamas owned by MSC Cruises originally opened in late 2019 and was closed shortly after due to the suspension of cruising for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ocean Cay is a former industrial sand extraction site, which was restored to a pristine island with a flourishing 64-square mile marine reserve. The mission of Ocean Cay is to “exist in harmony with the local ecosystem and is founded on a strong commitment to the restoration of marine resources and the ongoing conservation of existing marine life.” The island offers two miles of white sandy beaches surrounded by endless sweeping vistas of crystal blue waters. All MSC Cruises ships sailing out of Miami and Port Canaveral will call on Ocean Cay.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to launch our newest ship in Miami and celebrate its naming in Ocean Cay, as a further demonstration of our commitment to and investment in the U.S. market. Not only have we expanded our footprint in Florida by now offering two homeports with PortMiami and Port Canaveral to make our cruises even more accessible, but we’re also elevating the U.S. guest experience by bringing some of our best and most innovative ships for our North American guests. It is also no coincidence that Ocean Cay will be central to our celebrations next month. We can’t wait for more guests to see firsthand what makes the island so special,” remarked Ruben Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises.
