Costa Luminosa to Transfer to Carnival Cruise Line Fleet
Carnival Corporation has announced that Costa Cruises’ Costa Luminosa will transfer to the Carnival Cruise Line fleet. The change will take place this September as the ship rebrands to Carnival Luminosa.
The acquisition of Luminosa by Carnival Cruise Line is an update to the line’s plans in place to take the Costa Magica, which will now remain with Costa Cruises.
The first passenger cruises on Carnival Luminosa will start in November 2022 from Brisbane, Australia. Carnival Luminosa will operate from Brisbane from October through April, and reposition to homeport in Seattle for Alaska cruises from May through September.
Luminosa is a sister ship to Carnival’s four Spirit-class vessels. At full capacity, the ship can accommodate up to 2,826 guests and 1,050 crew.
“With our full fleet back to guest operations and the pent-up demand for Carnival we are seeing every week aboard our ships, the chance to expand with Luminosa and then the arrival of Carnival Celebration in November provides our guests with more choices and new ways to enjoy a Carnival vacation,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Our Spirit-class ships are very popular with our guests and Luminosa will be a great addition given the large number of balcony cabins which make her an ideal ship for this deployment. And equally important, this will allow Carnival to finally start our highly anticipated itineraries from Brisbane, so we’ll have two ships operating in Australia for the high season Down Under.”

To brand the ship as Carnival Luminosa from Costa, it will undergo updates to prepare for passengers this November. According to Carnival, the ship will not initially have all of the Funship 2.0 branded spaces that are standard in its fleet. The entire ship will be staffed by the Carnival Cruise Line crew.
Carnival Cruise Line plans to announce dates and details for the upcoming cruises out of Brisbane. Itinerary plans include visits to Australian favorite destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef and Airlie Beach.
