Review summary

This is a bucket list trip that let us go to countries we never dreamed of visiting , plus we got to see the Canal and whales! The ship is easy to navigate and was nice, but could use a few updates.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
It was a little confusing as to where we were supposed to enter the cruise terminal, but the check in and embarkation was fast and we were on the ship enjoying a drink in no time. The only real minus was that they failed to give us a map of the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food and drink were good most everywhere. O'Sheehans could use more variety on their menu. Service was pretty good overall, a bit slow on a few occasions, but not often. The specialty restaurants were good but not wonderful, the steakhouse was particularly disappointing--average food, not hot when we received it.

Cagney's Steakhouse

2 out of 5

Our experience was very disappointing. The steak was not that great and all the food was just barely warm. The staff was indifferent and did not seem very interested in taking care of us. Glad we got this on a free dining package, would have been mad to pay extra.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Hot tubs were not very hot. The pool was nice, but people left stuff to reserve loungers (the rules against this were not enforced) so it was often hard to find one anywhere near the pool. Did not use the fitness center or any sports activities.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The shows in the theater were very enjoyable, but the theater itself is dated and the seats are very uncomfortable. The quality of the live musical entertainment varied widely, some was quite good, some mediocre.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our cabin steward was excellent, could not have been better. For the most part, everyone else was polite and efficient, with only a few exceptions.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
This is a smaller ship that does not have all the amenities of a larger ship, but we actually found that to be a plus, since everything was convenient. Considering that it was refurbished in spring 2018, it was not as nice and up to date as I would have imagined. The poolside dining area was not very well laid out and the lines were always confusing and congested.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was average size, but the bathroom seemed very small, especially the toilet area. The balcony was nice and offered good views with no obstructions. The lock on the cabin door was a bit fussy, but no other maintenance issues were noted. We found the bed to be uncomfortable, much more firm than we would prefer.

Ship tip

Make reservations for dinners online before you go. They do not take reservations for 2 in most of the restaurants after you board. Large parties need reservations evenat complementary restaurants to avoid long waits.

Ports of call

Cartagena, Colombia

3 out of 5
We took the catamaran to the old city. It was a nice boat ride, but be advised that this was a motorboat, not a sailboat. The walled city was cool, but we did not have nearly enough time to spend there and the street vendors hounded us constantly. The little cafe/shop area at the cruise port was nice for picking up souvenirs.

Panama Canal Transit

5 out of 5
Amazing, but kind of long.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

5 out of 5
Not a lot going on at the port itself. Went on an excursion to the Macaw Sanctuary. The birds were beautiful and the guides were well informed and entertaining. This excursion is recommended.

Puerto Corinto, Nicaragua

3 out of 5
This is really and industrial port, not much to do unless you go on an excursion. We went on the Spanish horse show excursion and it was very good if you enjoy horses.

Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

4 out of 5
The port is industrial, but the country itself was beautiful and interesting. We visited Antigua, which was beautiful, but wished we had more time to spend there.

Acapulco, Mexico

4 out of 5
We went on a boat tour to see the cliff divers. We enjoyed it very much. Don't go for the "shopping" afterward. They dragged us to a scruffy, half empty shopping mall that had only one store.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

5 out of 5
It was beautiful here and we saw many whales. Took the luxury sailboat cruise and had a lovely time, just wish we could have stayed longer.

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
They called too many groups at once, which led to a very long time standing in line to exit the ship and go thru customs. This was very difficult for the older people.
