Review summary

Initially we found the Epic difficult to navigate, at embarkation new cruisers were not getting enough direction as they first came on board & this caused some chaos and backups as you arrived on the ship. The same thing occurred during the emergency drill as staff never got folks to settle down & pay attention.  We have cruised before on large ships & river boats & always want to pay attention during the drill, this was the first time ever where staff had no control and those desiring to hear the instructions were not able to. We had just cruised on the Getaway the week before and preferred the few changes that had been made  to the layout, we found the escalator annoying for one thing to get to deck 5 mid. Getaway & Epic both require reservations for  almost all entertainment, i guess because of the huge number of passengers - i did not car e for that but soon understood that because of the numbers it was needed and actually worked very well with alot of choices for times & days.  I felt the complimentary shows were lacking and these two ships each required additional fees for the specials shows (Blue Man, le Cirque, Luminare, etc).  Staff was always helpful, friendly.  Food was very nicely prepared, although no lobster, creme brule or escargot here, alot of shrimp, steaks, prime rib and on the buffet Indian food selections.  Over all, we enjoyed our trips just maybe found for the cost that Princess, Celebrity or Carnival gives you more.

Complimentary entertainment was ok , extra fee entertainment was better.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our room steward John Cordell was always cheerful and asking if we needed anything, we looked forward to running into him throughout the day. Particularly special was Captain Sovdsnes, he approached my husband on deck one day and started talking with him. Joe was standing to his side and saw the uniform but didn't look to see rank or name, for some reason he thought he was the engineer. The next day we recieved an invitation from The Master to attend dinner. I did not want to go but Joe had enjoyed his talk with the engineer so i agreed to go and found joes engineer was the Captain! He was wonderful, funny, warm, could talk about anything from history to food. It really was the hihlight of our trip!
