Review summary

Our first cruise and we had a wonderful time. Loved the ship and the ports. Highly recommend a trip to the South Pacific. Explorer is on her last trip to Australia but they are bringing a bigger and better ship to replace her.

Ports of call

Noumea, New Caledonia

We docked in the container ship wharf and took a bus into town. Where you get off there is a Green train called Lyvai that takes you on a trip around town and down to citrus bay and a great lookout. Much cheaper than the touch touch train. they also have a hop on hop off that is pretty good. Souvenirs are cheaper in the supermarket across the road. The museums are good to visit and really cheap.

Isle Of Pines (Ile Des Pins), New Caledonia

Paid 5500 Francs or $60 for two people to take a tour of the island, exchange rate was a rip off, but hey you dont have much choice. Worth doing, took us to some good spots. Snorkeling was fantastic around the little island but pretty crowded. Try the Isle of pines snails and the bougna, its a free sample to try.

Port Vila, Efate, Vanuatu

Get a bus from the port into town. They are basically 8 seater vans with a red B on the number plate, costs $5 each. We walked up and down the streets in the main part of town. Also went to the Cultural Centre on the way to the town. Best place to buy duty free is Fung Kuei.

Mystery Island, Vanuatu

This was my favourite. It takes approx 45 mins to walk around the whole island. Around half is sand and the other half rocks. Snorkeling was fantastic on the side of the island where the runway is. Try the Vanuatu prawns.

Lifou Isle, New Caledonia

Loved the port, wonderful to visit. Turtles can be seen in the water where the tender comes in. There are some biting fish in the water, not sure if it is all year round, it hurts but they dont break the skin or bleed so it's more a scare. The church on the hill is worth the walk. They will all take Australian dollars however you will get a better rate of exchange with Vatu.
