Review summary

The process for signing up for the cruise with Marriott was less that satisfactory. Misinformation was given and sometimes calls were not returned. Will probably not use Marriott again for vacation planning. Also the transfer to the airport was a disaster, see above. Otherwise the cruise itself was very enjoyable. I would especially commend our Cabin Steward and Kay in the Ensemble Bar and Sebastiano in the Blu Dining Room. There were many other attentive and helpful crew members on board. Did not like being constantly harrassed and hawked to by crew members trying to sale additional cost items such as the specialty restaurants and photo opps..

Embarkation

Great, luggage was a little later to the room than expected

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food was fine but not outstanding

Sunset Bar

3 out of 5

Great place to enjoy sail away. Did not particularly enjoy the smoking area, but I guess smokers need to have someplace to enjoy there smokes. The bar also ran out of Draft Beer early on in the cruise and never was resupplied. This should never occur on a cruise ship. I would give this bar a one star rating on this criteria.

Oceanview Cafe and Bar

3 out of 5

Ocean cafe was just OK. Food was average, and it took a while to learn where different foods would be located. Did enjoy the fresh fruit selection and the fish and chips.

Blu Restaurant

4 out of 5

Food was mostly mediocre, but service was great

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
enjoyed evening entertainment, fitness center and the Ensemble Bar, which was not available to review above. Did not attend the comedian's night which I understand was a disaster.

Fitness Center

4 out of 5

Fitness Center was well equipped. I never waited on any exercise equipment. Was not well manned personnel wise, as no one was watching the equipment or asking if you needed assistance.

Guest Relations And Excursions

3 out of 5

Many times there were not enough staff waiting on guests. I once observed two of the four guest relations people walk away while there was a long line of guests to be waited on. A couple of times I received conflicting information from those who answered the phone with those behind the counter. I learned that I had to confirm information from a second source.

Pool

2 out of 5

Pool Bar ran out of drat beer. A ship should never run out of a line of beverage. This also occurred at the Sunset Bar.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Particularly enjoyed the dance night at the Solerium.

Library

1 out of 5

Very poor. This was the smallest collection of books that I have encountered on any cruise ship.

Sky Observation Lounge

4 out of 5

Was a great area to lounge and read in quiet environment. It was closed at certain times for not apparent reason.

Ensemble Lounge

5 out of 5

Excellent lounge, we visited there almost every evening before dinner. Kay, a bar tender, was very personable and engaged her passengers with a higher that expected, excellent relationship.

Ports of call

Auckland, New Zealand

Wonderful, exciting and amazing. War Memorial was outstanding

Tauranga, New Zealand

5 out of 5
Good, particularly enjoyed the hot pools and Mauri exhibits. Did the Blue Baths & Rotura Thermal Outing.

Napier, New Zealand

5 out of 5
Excellent. Did the bus tour and up to Mt. TE Mata. Presentation on great earthquake was super. Beautiful Art Deco town.

Wellington, New Zealand

4 out of 5
Bus tour of the town was fine. Mt. Victoria was outstanding. Stayed in town after tour, but there was a mix-up on the place to be picked up. We were let off at one place, and when we returned there we were told we had to make a mile walk to the other pick-up point.

Picton, New Zealand

5 out of 5
Did the Wineries of Marlborough Tour. Was an excellent tour, one of the best we experienced on the cruise. All three wineries were outstanding.

Sydney, Australia

5 out of 5
Three hour bus tour of Sidney. Linda was our tour guide and she was excellent. Many great views and interesting facts about Sidney. Enjoyed "Bucket List" cafe at Bondi Beach.

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

5 out of 5
Did the Richmond & Tasmanian Devils Tour. Highlight of tour and excursions of the cruise was the visit to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary where we were able to interact with many of the wildlife indigenous species.

Adelaide, Australia

4 out of 5
Not enough time allocated to this port. Did not have time to spend in Adelaide as the train ride back to the ship was one hour. Thoroughly enjoyed the town of Hahndorf

Fremantle (Perth), Australia

2 out of 5
Did the bus tour and boat ride to Perth. The tour guide was worst of the trip with the bus driver much more knowledgeable. Boat trip was fine but uneventful. The trip to the airport at the end of this tour was a disaster. We were let out at Terminal 1 and our plane left from Terminal 4. We were told by the airport personnel that this should not have happened. It took almost another hour to get to T-4 as the airport shuttles were swamped by our cruise. Clearly uncoordinated. I blame the Cruise and Tour folks for this debacle.

Disembarkation

Please see the the notes above for the tour of Freemantle/Perth. The bus driver of the airport shuttle was great and very helpful. The process for loading luggage and proceeding to the tour bus was reasonable
