Dunedin has many things to do and not every attraction is within walking distance so I recommend a day tour. We booked a day tour with a great company called: Good Company Tours. They pick you up from your ship (so you avoid a $20 return shuttle from the Port Chalmers port to Dunedin city area). From there it takes you to many places: Baldwin Street (the steepest street in the world). It then takes you to the beautiful Dunedin Railway Station and drives you past scenic streets and lets you stop for photos. After you go to Larnarch Castle where you can buy lunch as it isn't included. When you get dropped off at the castle you get 1 hour for lunch at the cafe (the cafe is overpriced and not worth the money) and to look at the gardens. After you get a tour of the castle. They drop you off at the Octagon (Dunedin City Area) which has nice shops, restaurants and cafes (though there are also Dunedin Botanic Gardens, markets, museums and more) then they drop you back to your ship. Anyway Dunedin is really beautiful. Also Port Chalmers has a few cool things to do.

Don’t get the shuttle bus it costs $20 and a long queue, walk into Port Chalmers , just a short way and catch the local bus number 14 into Dunedin for $6 each. We had fish & chips and booked the seaside train from the beautiful station, a must see. On the way back if you want to they will drop you back at Port Chalmers so you can walk back to the ship . Lovely day out

Did Dunedin by bus on our own and went to Cadbury Chocolate, had a great time there then walked around the shopping center before getting the bus back to Port Charmers

Dunedin is beautiful. The architecture is gorgeous - train station and churches. See the botanical gardens (walking distance from downtown) and the Cadbury chocolate factory. See the free museum next to the train station.

We enjoyed visiting the Larnach Castle and Cadbury Chocolate factory tours and saw the city's attractrions on a hop on hop off bus. We learned the haunting stories about the family who lived at the castle and saw the gardens and ate salmon wraps and carrot cup cakes. We had a delightful tour guide at the Cadbury chocolate factory. We got bags of awesome chocolate and ate a chocolate lunch. Of course, bought bars of chocolate home.

Beautiful place, small quaint village- Do the Heritage Taieri Gorge Railway, but not through the ship, book when you get into town. So scenic and beautiful. Don't do the city tour, it's boring!

Beautiful and fascinating little town full of historical buildings and churches. The town is easy to navigate and has plenty of great places to eat. The historical train station has fascinating architecture. We took the train ride down the mountain which was glorious but I advise pre organising a tour as we just got on a random tour and the guide was hopeless. Luckily the train ride made up for it.

Ship docks at Port Chalmers, bus into Dunedin. Free wi-fi on dock or nearby library. Recommend the Taieri Gorge Railway trip or Speights' Brewery Tour. Make sure you visit the magnificent railway station.
