A: Tourists are strongly recommended to NOT drive in the city of Rome. It’s nuts there….even crossing the street as a pedestrian is crazy….watch a few videos on YouTube

Answered by deboftheseas on November 9, 2023

A: Unless your intent is to immediately leave Rome and travel through the country, I cannot recommend getting a car in Rome. There is no where to park it. And those unaccustomed to Italian driving may put themselves into unnecessary peril, both physical... ly and legally. If you are talking about getting the car in Civitavecchia and driving from there, entirely different matter. It’s a good way of getting from place to place through the Tuscan countryside. On the other hand, it you just want to go from city to city and hang out in cities… don’t get a car. Take the train. It’s easier and cheaper, but bring some patience, they are often not on time.See More

A: totally agree about taking a ship excursion! Trains and traffic can cause delays, making you late and you don't want to miss the ship. Also get an excursion specifically for the Vatican ... they will have skip- the-line access and trust me, the lines... are notoriously long. It is impossible to just go in for a quick tour of the Sistine Chapel: you have to make your way through the whole museum to get to it. The museum is enormous with so much to see. we practically jogged through to get to the Chapel and it still took hours and we went in the off peak time. Well worth seeing though. Please note that you cannot speak or take pictures inside the Sistine Chapel ( it is a holy place and the camera flashes can be harmful to the art.) Buy a postcard of it instead at the gift shop and mail it home to yourself from the Vatican post office which is right in St. Peter's Square)See More

A: When I did Rome on my first cruise 10 years ago, I booked us tickets on the Hop On/Hop Off bus. It goes around and stops at each site you want to visit. You can get off and visit as long as you want and then catch the next one that comes along to get... to your next site. If I remember correctly, Termini Station is at/near stop #1 and la Fontana di Trevi is last on the route. I also would highly recommend checking online for entry tickets to the sites you want to go to that require them (e.g. The Colosseo) to avoid having to stand in ridiculously long lines for ticket booths. You'll be able to go right to the entrance.See More

If you book a tour of the necropolis under the Vatican (http://www.scavi.va/content/scavi/en... /ufficio-scavi.html), you will come up at the entrance to the Vatican, bypassing long lines. We took a taxi to the Spanish Steps, then started walking south, stopping at Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. We were able to walk at our own pace, stopping where we wanted.See More
