La Romana, Dominican Republic overview

La Romana is a city on the Dominican Republic's Caribbean coast and a gateway to nearby resort areas. Overlooking the Chavón River, Altos de Chavón is a re-created 16th-century Mediterranean village with artists' workshops. An obelisk painted with colorful images of local life stands in the city center. South of the city is Catalina Island, with beaches, coral reefs and the wrecked ship of pirate William Kidd.

Not much to do right off the ship, so I definitely recommend an excursion here. We took a taxi with friends to the Dreams Resort, which was $65 each all-inclusive and well worth it. The food was fantastic, the drinks were cold, and there was an option of a lovely, uncrowded pool or the beach. It was a wonderful, relaxing day.

Here we visited Dreams La Romana resort on a day pass, which had an open bar, lots of good food, a nice pool and beautiful beach. Taxi for 8 round trip was $100, which can be negotiated just outside the port. There are some shops around the port, but quite low key and nothing that appealing. I would strongly suggest leaving this port, as the port is very new and there is almost nothing to do at the actual port other than visit little overpriced shops.

Greatly improved since our last visit. There is now what I would call an upscale straw market. Some nice hand crafted items and some “real” shops. A small band was greeting passengers. Highly recommended a shore tour if you want more of the island.
