We do not take our passports into ports. We have a photo copy of the main page (the one with your picture) that we carry with us and another ID (driver's license) plus the ship's card. So far it has worked out fine.

In most ports these days you will need your passport. Check the snorkeling but most will provide a small locker and of they do not then invest in a small water proof carrying bag or belt to hold things like passport and money.

And it lets you pretty much travel anywhere in the world, at any time.

Try doing that with only a birth certificate!

We just renewed our Canadian passports for 10 yrs, and paid $120 each I think it was. That's pretty inexpensive ID at only a dollar a month, in my opinion.

I agree, it doesn't pay to take a chance. I know, though, that passports now are very expensive.

I agree with the advice to go to the immigration site for the Bahammas to get the correct, up to date information. You may get outdated or wrong information from a forum like this, and then you might be denied entry, which would be too bad.

Why risk it? You never know what might happen - best be prepared. Bring your passport and always carry at least a photocopy of your title page.

Generally, all U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to The Bahamas, as well as proof of anticipated departure from The Bahamas. Those traveling to The Bahamas on a cruise may use another Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document. However, we strongly recommend visitors obtain a passport before travel in case of an unforeseen emergency that requires a cruise passenger to disembark and return by air.
