Review summary

Viking still does it right. The cruise from Passau to Budapest (plus the pre-cruise stay in Prague - highly recommended) was on a well-appointed clean ship, with attentive and pleasant staff. The river itself is picturesque (coming into Budapest at night is amazing), and many of the stops have interesting old architecture and interesting history (from the Habsburg Empire era, WWII, communists, and now democracy). All in all, both relaxing and informative.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Overall, food in dining room was very good. Plenty of choices at breakfast buffet. Most but not all dinner choices were very good. Premium wine was much better than the basic choice (we paid for the all-inclusive beverage service, and we are happy we did).

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
None to speak of.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Entertainment is not a priority for Viking's river cruises -- evening "shows," mostly by the cruise director were pretty lame.

Children's Programs

No children allowed on Viking river cruises

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Excellent service -- room steward was like a pixie, never there (never intrusive) but always there. Bartender and most waitstaff were great. Room steward, bartender, and at least two waiters knew our names within 24 hours. Service desk staff were always helpful and pleasant.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Spotless at all times.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
After initial reaction that the room was a bit small, we quickly got used to it. Having a balcony was well worth the extra expense.

Ports of call

Passau, Germany

Linz, Austria

Visited Cesky-Krumloff, a charming old mountain city.

Krems, Austria

Viking seems to have invested considerably in the Göttweig Abbey, so the Viking ships stop here, but it seems like an artificial stop.

Vienna, Austria

Incredible city, needs much more time. Incredible buildings, interesting history.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Another charming little city.

Budapest, Hungary

5 out of 5
The ship approaches the city at about 10 pm -- the view of the city, its historical buildings and bridges all lit up, is incomparable and amazing. The city itself during the day also has lots to see, and the history is interesting.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Very smooth, well organized disembarkation.
