Great cruise on the Rhine - you can't go wrong with Viking. Be sure and do "Top of Cologne" and the "Wine Tasting" - great excursions. Skip the dressy clothes, pack light and enjoy. Use the extra room for gifts you buy or maybe a bit of local cheese to bring home.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Smooth and pleasant, our luggage was checked to our rooms and we have time to tour a couple of museums.

Food and Dining
5 out of 5
I would encourage you to consider the Silver Spirits package - we got to taste exceptional wines and liquors that we would never buy at home and the bartenders were wonderful. Breakfast was the highlight of the day to me - omelets cooked to order, a selection of breakfast meats, fresh yogurt, warm oatmeal with hot mild, fruits, breads, juices, coffee and more. Lunch was usually a local specialty and standards, dinner had a regional menu as well as a chef's choice plus "always available" selections. Remember Viking doesn't do around the clock food like ocean cruises, but the table service and the food service in the forward sections of the bar overlooking the river was outstanding.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
The trip is all about the excursion, so the onboard activities were limited to the evening piano player, some demonstrations, and some of the passengers sang. Not very lively, but the crowd was usually tired.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Awesome service and the staff was again exceptional even with the staff having to wear masks and deal with Covid protocols. Couldn't have better people from Viking. The front desk staff seemed a bit confused about buying vouchers, but I give them a pass since the tour director was swamped.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
Easy to get around and I love small ships. Very well maintained and clean. I missed some of the amenities that I was used to from previous trips, the bathrobes and slippers for one, and coffee and pastries on the 2nd level instead of just the 3rd level, but overall very well done.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
Love the Veranda cabins. Nothing like having a drink on your balcony in the evening either after the return from the shore or at night when you are just unwinding.
Ship tip
Going from AMS to Basel, get a cabin on the left side of the ship - better view. Bring a hiking stick to help navigate cobblestone streets and uneven footing. or women - a small cross body purse is a must, and for everyone, have a hat - the sun is brutal.
