Review summary

We were debating between the Lyon-Provence and Bordeaux Viking River Cruises. While there is probably more to do/sights to see in Provence we ended up choosing Bordeaux to see a new area of France (since I'd already been to Provence) and for our love of wine. Viking goes above and beyond in terms of service!

Ports of call

Bordeaux, France

5 out of 5
We enjoyed the night walk upon arrival to get us to bed and on Bordeaux time as well as time on our own here on the last night. The optional excursion to Renaud Calvet's home was a treat, too! Great cremant and pastries to boot.

Cadillac (Sauternes), France

5 out of 5
Our guide, Jamie, was excellent here. Stopped for a cafe before returning to the ship.

Libourne (Saint Emilion), France

4 out of 5
We docked in Libourne, but I'm not sure if there was a shore excursion because we paid extra and chose an optional excursion to go truffle hunting! They ended the tour with a little (not much!) time in Saint Emilion.

BOURG, FRANCE

3 out of 5
Bourg was a cute, sleepy town. Our walking tour was great, but there wasn't much to do there otherwise.

Blaye, France

3 out of 5
A great tour of the citadel; but not much to do in the town otherwise. Stopped for a glass of wine and got to sip a Viognier instead of the usual Bordeaux we'd been enjoying all ship!

Pauillac

5 out of 5
We didn't actually visit Pauillac. I think we just docked here (or another small port) to be transferred to Margaux for some luxury wine tasting and a 3-course wine pairing dinner at the Chateau Kirwan. Amazing experience!
