Not a home run trip, but not bad, either

15 Night Roof Of The World (Shanghai To Beijing)
Sail Date: September 30, 2010
Ship: Viking Century Sun (RETIRED) 564
Cabin Type: Balcony

This tour had two parts, really; a river cruise up the Yangtze River and a series of land-based tours punctuated by flights - from Tibet to Xian to Beijing. For the ship itself, it was a decent vessel, berths were comfortable and the food and service generally quite good. However, the air conditioning system on the boat is really lacking, because after 5 days aboard over half the passengers and crew were suffering from colds and flu. My suspicion is that the air filtration system just wasn't working or even installed.

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food was generally quite good.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Overall, the choices were limited and the speakers for lectures were utterly boring in their delivery.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our dining staff were great - and very attentive to our culinary needs.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
As I understand it, this ship is being decommissioned by Viking and will be replaced next year with a new ship - though it appears it will have nearly the same configuration.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Not luxurious, but very comfortable. The TV, though, was a joke.

It's a monumental dam, but you don't really get to see much of it beyond a visit to two "approved" viewing sites.

The pagoda here is quite old and well worth the visit.

Pros: You get to see lots of China in a short period of time

Cons: Not nearly enough free time to simply explore, and the food was pretty mediocre
