Review summary

Great ship loved most of the new layout. Great cruise overall

Embarkation

4 out of 5
We had stayed overnight in Barcelona and took a taxi to the port arriving c11.20am. There were large queues where you had to queue to hand over your bags (haven’t seen that before) before joining a second queue to check-in. We were Blue Lane (UK - so can’t get medallions shipped to us yet) but it moved quite quickly and we were onboard around midday

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We ate in the MDR (Deck 7), Soellbound and Alfredo’s in the evening. Otherwise we used the Eatery or International Cafe. All the food was good quality and plentiful. We drank in most of the bars around the ship - good variety of cocktails throughout.

Horizons Dining Room

3 out of 5

We had prebooked a private table. We had a different table most evenings, so no real opportunity to get to know the wait staff. The food was all very good. The service could be slow at times - on one occasion we had been in the MDR for over 80 minutes and had only had 2 courses. Not sure if there was an issue - no-one said. The other negative was the lack of visibility of restaurant managers. No-one came to our table (or any other table I could see) to ask if everything was ok - I think that’s quite poor.

Crooners Bar

4 out of 5

Nice relaxed bar with plenty of seating and huge windows looking to the sea. Good choice of drinks too. Sat watching the CATS string duo a few evenings - they were good too.

O'Malley's Irish Pub

5 out of 5

Favourite venue. No Guinness on tap was the only downside, but the food all looked great (we never actually tasted any of it but it looked quality pub grub). The entertainment here was first class - great sing along time. Usually quite busy and a small venue.

Lido Slice

5 out of 5

Best pizza at sea - they say. I believe it, it was very good. Plenty of pool side seating and quick service too.

International Café

4 out of 5

Friendly service but can be very busy at peak times. Good selection of sandwiches and pastries.

Alfredo's Pizzeria

4 out of 5

We ate here one evening. It wasn’t too busy so we seated immediately. We each had the pizza which is huge and we didnt have any room for dessert. The pizza was good - mine was vegetarian and I found it a bit soggy in places.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We played the casino a few nights. Overall we were even but it’s great entertainment to play. Some folk take it seriously but it’s just a bit of fun for us. It’s a fairly big casino with a specified smoking area (though it sometimes smelled of smoke throughout)

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The entertainment staff were all great especially Alvaro and Sierra. There weren’t fewer quizzes than I would have liked but that’s just me. The musicians were very good especially CATS string duo and Kory the pianist at O’Malleys. The stage shows were good too - Vallora - a pirate rock musical -was excellent. Really enjoyed Naathan Phan and of course the Spellbound experience.

Princess Live!

4 out of 5

Pluses and minuses compared to other ships. On the plus side it’s a better layout and seems larger. Much better seating throughout and the bar is inside the venue. On the negative it’s basically fully open to noise from other venues and passing traffic. This is the location where the comedians perform and these sort of distractions are annoying. It’s also a pain when doing a music quiz and passers-by are shouting the answers in!!

Princess Arena

4 out of 5

Seems smaller than similar venues on other Princess ships but that may be an illusion. The circular stage worked quite well for some things and less well for others. As always on Princess - get there early (at least 30 mins) to get a seat (and don’t save seats for your party of 8!!)

Spellbound by Magic Castle

5 out of 5

Excellent evening and well worth the extra money you pay. The meal was very good and we met some great people there. It’s only 30 passengers at each performance so it’s easy to talk to a lot of people. The magic shows (a small warm up in the bar area followed by the show proper) were great. Some of the close up magic was spectacular and there was one trick which seemed totally impossible. We enjoyed sitting in the special area after the show too with the speciality cocktails. Treat yourself.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
As always the staff were very good. The Captains announcements were the best I have heard in a cruise - fairly short but entertaining. I was aware of seeing considerably less of the senior ships officers around the ship. It’s because it’s a bigger ship or I wasn’t in the right places but you usually see a few officers around the ship.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I enjoyed the new layout. With a cabin on deck 11 it was very easy to walk down 2 floors to the Eatery and International Cafe or 4 floors to the entertainment venues. I liked the Dome and especially Cascade Bar which is inside at the Dome. Everything was clean and - as a new ship - well-maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Inside cabin with new layout which worked well enough for a single occupant - I would imagine it’s very tight with more people, especially as you come in the door. The bathroom is a huge upgrade though - glass doors on the shower which seems a good bit bigger too. Very comfortable and always clean.

Ship tip

Experience all you can and enjoy
