Sal, from United, worked with us to book an exceptional trip to Antarctica. This was our 7th Continent and 95th "country". We cruised with 197 other guests through the pristine waters of Antarctica. Each day brought new surprises to our senses. The sights, the food, the expeditions, and the other travelers made this our favorite voyage yet.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
This option always you to skip the treacherous Drake Passage and fly directly into Antarctica. As a result there is an extra hotel stay at either end of the cruise in Punta Arena. However, you save 4 days of sailing through the passage.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Exceptional options aboard the ship.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
This is an expedition, not a cruise ship. So, the focus is on Antarctica and getting out on Zodiacs to see the Continent and explore on land and water.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
They don't get tipped, but they do everything to get you to remember them as providing great service.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
Ship was designed for an expedition, but don't confuse that with being stodgy. It's beautiful with lots of fun places to go to be with others, or alone.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
Beautiful cabin on the 6th deck. Excellent size and the beds couldn't have been more comfortable.
Ship tip
Take advantage of all of the shore / Zodiak trips. We loved doing the kayaking, and the polar plunge.
KING GEORGE ISLAND, SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS, ANTARCTICA
5 out of 5
The sights are seen no where else on earth. The icebergs are works of art. We saw a pod of 30 Orcas, humpback whales, 3 breeds of penguins (500K in all), seals, leopard seals.
The disembarkation is difficult in that no other cruise ships fly into King Edwards Island. The facilities there just hold you long enough to get you onto a contracted flight back to Punta Arenas. The disembarkation from the cruise ship was terrific, from the island itself needs a bit of an upgrade; however, don't let this dissuade you from doing the trip.
