Review summary

Best weather of all my crossings. Not the best crossing I’ve done but not the worse crossing. I found that people retired early during this crossing and by midnight the ship was dead. Guess the passengers on this voyage didn’t like partying and staying up late. I made many new friends on this voyage and I will more than likely do a fifth crossing on board Queen Mary 2.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Fastest embarkation in Southampton I’ve ever experienced.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5

Commodore Club

5 out of 5

Favourite bar on board. The view is amazing, great cocktails, and the daily Friends of Dorothy’s social hour is always well attended.

Chart Room

5 out of 5

Second favourite bar on board the ship. The bartending staff are amazing. Great place to have a drink before supper.

Britannia Restaurant

4 out of 5

Food is very good. I’ve noticed that the food quality has degraded over the last two voyages. Finding a good table with good company is essential for a memorable voyage on board.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
There’s always lots to do on board, especially activities that you won’t find on other ships. How many can say they’ve done fencing lessons at sea? Afternoon tea is always an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon event. Friend’s of Dorothy is always well attended in the Commodore Club. The guest lecturers were not the most interesting this voyage.

Mayfair Shops

3 out of 5

Cunard needs better souvenirs. I found most of it rather tacky, not very good, and overpriced.

Entertainment

3 out of 5

Queens Room

4 out of 5

The largest ballroom at sea. Afternoon tea here is delightful if evening dancing is not your thing.

Illuminations

4 out of 5

The primary location for the guest lecturers. Show up early if you want a seat. They need to create new planetarium shows. After four crossings, the “night skies of the North Atlantic” show gets repetitive. However, it did take me two voyages before I saw a planetarium show in it’s entirety (it is easy to fall asleep during the show).

Library

4 out of 5

Beautiful library. Good location to watch the ship cross the ocean.

Royal Court Theatre

3 out of 5

Cunard has never been known for its entertainment. I usually attend only one show per crossing just to say I did it.

G32

4 out of 5

Always a good night of dancing if you make it to G32!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff on board are always very polite and respectful to the guests. I’ve sailed with a lot of the staff before and it is always a pleasure to recognize them and greet them. I’m surprised that most recognized me as well.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The more I travel on the Queen Mary 2, the more design quirks I’ve noticed. The layout of the ship isn’t the best (especially at the bow) but the ship is beautiful nonetheless. You never feel there are too many people on board the ship. The Art Deco style heartens back to the golden age of the transatlantic liners.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Had the best obstructed balcony cabin. Instead of a full sized lifeboat, my balcony was obstructed by a smaller rigid hulled inflatable boat. I could see the ocean from my cabin with minimal interference from the boat.

Ship tip

Packing light is almost impossible. Expect the grand. Dress well, partake in the activities on board the ship, and enjoy the voyage.

Ports of call

Southampton (London), England

4 out of 5
Southampton is a nice historic town. If you have the opportunity to explore the city before embarking, I highly recommend it.

New York, New York

5 out of 5
Seeing the Statue of Liberty on the morning of arrival is always a treat. #WelcomeToAmerica

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Disembarking in Brooklyn is always a rather unpleasant experience. There are always delays and the lineup/queue to see a customs officer always takes forever.

Traveler Photos

The cabin Not too much of an obstructed view, compared to the other obstructed view cabins. Surf and turf, beef Wellington and lobster tail. Aleksandra, my favourite bartender on board
