Review summary

This was our 7th cruise with Cunard, and the 6th crossing. When we first contemplated a transatlantic crossing we had some reservations we might be bored but found the time goes so fast we never did. There is something subtly addictive about the experience which is why we have now completed so many crossings, we only started cruising 8 years ago. We love the formality of dressing for dinner, so different to our every day lives, and the fact most people adhere to the dress code which creates a sumptuous atmosphere. Knowing you have a run of uninterrupted sea days is so relaxing and you develop your own routine for each day. There is always lots of things you could do but we usually find we fill our time easily enough without partaking of many organised events, although on this trip I did the Commodores cocktail tasting, it was a fun and interesting class - you need to keep your eyes peeled for it being offered though because it has limited spaces. Ship rarely feels crowded, the buffet can be busy if you hit it in the 5-10 minutes after a lunchtime lecture finishes. You only really become aware of how many people are on board during muster & disembarkation.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Main dining room is impressive and the food served there was good, a much better menu than last time we sailed with them. Buffet always served good freshly made food, can be a bit crowded at peak times but we could always find a seat.

Commodore Club

5 out of 5

Great place to meet with others from online forums on the first sea day. Lovely venue for pre & post dinner drinks especially when everyone is really dressed up on gala nights.

The Golden Lion

5 out of 5

Very good selection of beer. Good food at lunchtime. Nice venue for the quiz. Good place to sit and watch the sea on stormy days as it crashes over the windows.

Chart Room

5 out of 5

Lovely place to spend time both day and night. Comfortable seating, excellent service

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Lectures are good and repeated in the cabin if you have to miss one due to activities clashing. Quizzes were popular and entertaining. Strolling round the promenade deck knowing you are in the middle of an ocean always feels lovely.

Winter Garden

Now the Carinthia lounge it's a lovely space, nice light breakfast and lunch offerings. Enjoyable music & entertainment offerings in this venue too.

Art Gallery

calm with interesting art to view

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We only attended one show as we prefer to go for a drink but the one we saw was good and our table mates enjoyed the shows they attended. Musicians playing throughout the day around the ship were all good and give the ship a lot of it's ambience.

Queens Room

5 out of 5

Lovely place to watch people dance (or participate in dancing if you can)

Library

5 out of 5

Such variety! Daily crossword & sudoku issued from here

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service excellent as always. Always impressive to be remembered. Staff efficient and friendly if you have chance to talk to them.

Ship Quality

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Standard layout. Sheltered balcony has no glass so have to stand to see sea.

Ship tip

Pay attention to the carpets to help orientate yourself by staircase & area.

Ports of call

Southampton (London), England

Only dropped car off at rental place and walked to ship. There is a good shopping centre nearby if you forget anything.

New York, New York

It was raining and we didn't go into town as there was a cycle race on. We took a pre arranged arecibo car to Newark picked up a hire car & drove south to visit friends.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Self disembarked, there was a bit of a delay due to problems with a cable but we were kept informed and though tedious queuing the line moved swiftly once the gangway opened.
