When we went from the port to the airport the traffic was very heavy. Also, you need to have your luggage checked for fruit before you can check your bags. I would not book a flight before noon based on my one time experience flying to the mainland from Honolulu.

HNL advises no flights before noon & to be there 3 hours prior to your flight. Saturday is the busiest day for the airport and with agriculture screening, airline check in, TSA security and then finding your gate. It took us all of 2 hours and we had a late evening flight.
