Review summary

Upon arrival to our stateroom we noticed a very musty odor that turned out to be a leak in a utility closet between staterooms. The carpet was wet. The staff unsuccessfully tried to treat the problem with towels and a dehumidifier. It took two days for them to move us to another stateroom. Compensation for such an unacceptable inconvience was $50.00 credited to my account and a bottle of wine form the "complimentary" wine list. We were told by staff that the ship was full and they recently had crew staff resign just prior to the holidays. They work 110 hours per week for 5 months with very little time off and it was obvious that they were stressed. I have been on three other cruise lines and have not encountered such inconveniences.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Buffet food was poor to average and not always accessible. Came down at 10:45AM for breakfast and had to settle for stall toast and danishes. Finding a place to sit at lunch while at the buffet was sometimes difficult and the staff was not, at all, helpful as I have encountered on other cruise lines. Spending $10 per person extra to eat in a "specialty" restaurant after paying $2000 per person for the cruise is crazy. Depending upon your server the service could be quite slow in the dining room as, again, the staff was understaffed and having to wait on too many tables.

Entertainment

No Bingo in this ship. That has always been a highlight of ours on past cruises. Having no days "at sea" we found little to do on the ship during the day. We were in Hawaii so excursions were essential to see what Hawaii was really like. That certainly added a significant cost to the trip.

Service and Staff

One waitress in the dining room did go "above and beyond". She was personable, friendly, and provided superb service. Unfortunately, we were unable to get her to serve us everyday and found some pretty slow service otherwise.

Ship Quality

Decks were dirty. Public restrooms were dirty.

Cabin / Stateroom

See my comments above regarding the leak in our stateroom and having to live with that for 48 hours.

Ports of call

Hilo, Hawaii

Volcanoe National Park was very interesting.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

Wialea Canyon was beautiful. The Fern Grotto was closed so we visited the Paradise Gardens by tram. Also very nice. My children loved the snorkeling.

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

5 out of 5
Beautiful little town. Just spend the day stolling. Great Kona coffee. Children loved learning to surf.

Kahului, Maui

ATV adventure was great. Children spend a day at the beach in Kana'apali. They loved it and would love to go back. Lu'au in Wialea was very nice.

Pros: Ports of call were wonderful and the excursions gave us a good feel for Hawaii

Cons: Understaffed and stressed employees, poor handling of a stateroom issue

Recommends Pride of Aloha? No.
