Review summary

Wow Wow Wow! Ovation of the Seas has just become my all time favourite ship! This was its very first outing, and apart from a few minor teething problems, it was absolutely exceptional! The facilities are superb - indoor sky diving, flow rider, North Star Ride, Dodgems, Escape Room, Roller Disco, Circus Skills and so much more. The shows including Spectra, Dreamworks, The Tenors of Rock and Pete Matthews were amongst some of the best shows I have ever seen on a ship. It was also great to have the indoor pool solarium area, so you could still use the pool and sit out whatever the weather.
There weren't really too many down sides, but if I had to pick some, the visibility in Two70 (270 degree stage) was very poor from seemingly every angle. The seating does not seem to have been thought out at all, with high seats in front of low seats?? and some huge lampshades that seem to do little except obscure people's view. Shame as the venue is great but the audience seating area definitely needs re-thinking. Also there was only tea making in the rooms, but no coffee! Coffee was complementary with room service, but sachets in the room would have been easier. Our cruise was only 3 days, so it meant that everyone was trying to book everything at the same time which made availability scarce, but with so much to do I don't think that would happen on a longer cruise.
There was a great choice of places to eat, including lots of complementary restaurants. Rather than one big Dining room there was a choice of The Grande, Chic, American Idol and Silk (Indian), all of which were smaller complementary restaurants as well as cafe Two70, pizza and various other complementary eateries. The 4 main dining rooms also always offered the classic menu (salmon, steak etc), along side their daily menu, so there was always a safe "go to" option! The various menus could also be seen on any of the interactive "Wayfinder" screens throughout the ship.
The introduction of the WOWBand was great, and effectively allows you to wear your keycard on your wrist - well worth $4.99.
Also be sure to check out the interactive butterfly picture, if you touch the butterflies on the screen they will fly. It took us 3 days but my Husband and I eventually managed to get all the butterflies flying at once!
The decor on the Ovation is pretty quirky and quite different to other RCI ships. I absolutely loved it but it may not be to everyone's taste.
The Robotic Bar was interesting to watch for a short while, and quite quirky but a bit gimmicky. It was fun, but I wouldn't necessarily rush back there.
The Seaplex was great and changed from a basket ball court, to Dodgems, to a Roller Disco and loads more.
Indoor Sky-diving at Ripcord was great and a must-do experience as was the Flow-rider.
The North Star Ride offered great views and was a slow interesting experience that I'm glad I did but wouldn't rush back to.
Two70 was also host to "A Royal Mystery" which was like a multi-player Escape Room on a huge scale. It wasn't well advertised and we just happened upon it, but it was great, and well worth seeking out. As was "Escape from the Future" which was a smaller Classic type escape room game which is definitely worth booking early for.
The service throughout the whole ship was very good, and apart from having no handles on all our cupboards and drawers (despite asking 3 times), and having to open them with a spoon (!), all the rest of the service was exceptional.
The cabins are really spacious (we had a balcony and an outside cabin). The balcony was more than adequate to sit out on, and the window in the outside cabin was large and square with a window sill big enough to sit on! Certainly some of the biggest cabins I've known, and even included 2 separate wardrobes! Nice hot showers, extra comfy pillows, comfy beds, top marks all round.
I have to say the Ovation of the Seas ticks all the boxes. Brilliant brilliant ship that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone!

Just a random question about phone coverage. What is the best way to go about phone service.????? As roaming is so expensive.

gavz84    8 years ago

All free, and you have the option to pay for extra tuition on flow rider and Ifly

angmarkham    8 years ago

I paid for flo rider pre cruise and when I got there you could do a free open session. Don't pay for dodgems. Can't remember if I paid for sky diving. It was 1 minute of flying which to be honest was enough and a great experience

gkbreen    8 years ago

Just wondering , do you pay to use the sky diving, flow rider & dodgems ?

JayneTownley    8 years ago

We are off on the Navigator in 2 weeks time, but I think it might have a lot to live up to to be as good as the Ovation! We'll see! :o)

sarahh0913    8 years ago

Yes you do have to book Marissa but they will only show on your planner much closer to the time. Just check a couple of months beforehand. You should also then be able to book entertainment and activities, so you can book your meals around these.

Marando59    8 years ago

Just checking do you have to book the complimentary restaurants? as I'm going in Jan . Maybe it's a bit early to book these yet ?? As they are not showing up on my cruise planner. Iv booked a for a paying restaurant just now. Cheers Marissa

emmaclaire26    8 years ago

No not at all, was just the typical stress before holiday and been tired, picked up some viral infection

mariebarker    8 years ago

Was you ill because of the ship ?

emmaclaire26    8 years ago

Jayne that sounds a pretty good description of Oviation, I loved the ship, even though I was ill and couldn't do everything I wanted, I managed to do some ie North Star, I highly recommend. we had issues with our cabins on Deck 3, my only criticism would be that gangways next to cabins was not a good idea, been woken at 4 am by the cleaners and then at 6.00am bleeping sounds, these cabins aft and forward should not be booked out unless you are made aware or you get up at 6.00 am. There were also air-conditioning problems on deck 3 which hopefully will be sorted, hasten to say we were upgraded to a balcony. We prebooked most things which made life a lot easier. The Two70 does have restricted views, however upstairs is a good place to sit, I think the lampshades should be removed. The ship is amazing and I would highly recommend

Sounds like an awesome time.. Do you happen to know if there are any Ironing facilities onboard the ship?

rozmck    8 years ago

You are all making me jealous we didn't cruise until 15 Dec so long to wait😢

paulhinch    8 years ago

Oooo and book "escape from the future". This lasts an hour or so and provided a crystal maze type event with puzzles, clues and teamwork to get from the locked room against the clock. Cant say too much as I'd spoil the suprise. Its brilliant

mariebarker    8 years ago

That you paul I will do😃

paulhinch    8 years ago

Once onboard, connect to the open RC wifi. This is solely for the IQ app. It is free, allows the app to work but will not allow you to connect to the web on it. I used it throughout to view my statement, book shows, restaurants, activities etc. Its easy and simply to navigate. If you dont want to do this, the tv in your room connects to the same system to view itenary etc. Id go online at the rc website now and book restaurants before you board as they fill up quickly. I was caught out on that. Live and learn eh?! Enjoy. Oh also if you buy anything from shops onboard do it in your home port to avoid the 20% charges at sea.

Great positive review . Will pack a spoon! 😉

mariebarker    8 years ago

Thanks sunnygirl x

sunnygirl    8 years ago

Carni2 On the royal IQ app you can purchase a package for $7.95 that allows unlimited calls and texts to others onboard via the app.

mariebarker    8 years ago

Thank you Sarah have a great trip 😃

sarahh0913    8 years ago

Marie, you dont need to pay for the internet to use the app ive been told. You just have to have the wifi signal and it works... Have downloaded it to use on our cruise for Fri :)

mariebarker    8 years ago

Thank you Jayne this has been very useful information only one thing If i downloaded the RCI IQ wouldn't that require Internet ? Thanks

carni2    8 years ago

Will do.. Thanks

JayneTownley    8 years ago

I'm sure you'll love it - it's an absolutely superb ship! Best tip is pre-book as many of the activities and shows as you can before you get on board and download the RCI IQ App as it allows for easy booking of activities and doing etc

carni2    8 years ago

Thanks Jayne, I will ask about the phones when we board in May.. Getting excited now!

JayneTownley    8 years ago

EmmaClaire26 yes there is a kettle and tea bags, just no coffee! Carni2, don't know about the portable phones sorry, as we were travelling with teens, and the last thing they want to do is keep in touch with us! (But if they are offered on other ships I wouldn't be surprised as the ship seemed to have the best of all other ships)

carni2    8 years ago

Do you know if they offer portable phones for hire onboard? (To keep in contact with the kids onboard)

emmaclaire26    8 years ago

Thanks jayne, is there a kettle in the room to make tea, as I know they did away with it on Oasis of the Seas?
