Ship: Oceana

Traveled as: Family (older children)

Review summary

Not the cruise we hoped for but a good break and time together. Teenage kids enjoyed the freedom of the ship and we felt they were safe. Oceana is an older ship but not in bad condition. Wish she had a crows nest bar. Staff are great and very friendly. Bad weather was the main cause of the issues as the ship was late docking at the start. Probably just need to expect cruises to Northern Europe at this time of year can be subject to bad weather.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
This was were it all started to go wrong. We arrived as requested 4 hours after our original embarkation time. Unfortunately most people seems to ignore this request. We waited over an hour to unload the car, then when we finally entered the terminal it was full. Long wait to check in and the que to board the ship went all the way round the inside to the check in desks.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food was very good in the MDR in the evening, we used the MDR also for lunch also good. Buffet was to be expected and fine for a lazy late breakfast. Kids loved the buffet.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Onboard speaker not to our interest, didn't take part in much.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Shows all very good, thought the 3 male singers first show was better than second. Comedian very good Phil somebody, really enjoyed his late night over 18's show.

Children's Programs

4 out of 5
Kids club good, both kids made friends and were always busy.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff very friendly and always helpful. Cabin steward was excellent and was very flexible managing to fit his jobs around our teenage kids that didn't get up before lunch! Restaurant team also very professional nothing too much trouble we were very well looked after.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Ship does not have a Crows Nest and I miss this. However the buffet has this prime location and it certainly makes for a very open and bright space. Thought the Yaght and Compass was rather like a corridor not cosy and secluded like a late night bar should be.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Cabin clean, had everything we needed. Bathroom very small we had a balcony and our kids had a inside they had a larger bathroom than us. Beds comfortable. Only downside only 1 power socket so take a 4 way or multi USB charger. Aircon dreadful dried us out at night but no way to turn it off.

Ship tip

Bring a multi USB power supply as only 1 socket in room

Ports of call

Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) Did not visit port

Too rough/windy. We diverted to Rotterdam, great port and took the train to Amsterdam as we had booked our own trip to Anne Frank's house and Riply's Believe it or not. Train very expensive and Ripleys not worth it. Second day took the free bus into Rotterdam and walked back to the cruise terminal.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Excellent, we got an early disembarkation slot, had breakfast then went straight off the ship no queuing at all. Collected cases and made way to car home by lunchtime!
