Review summary

This was our 2nd cruise, both were NCL and our first with our infant son (7 months). We had a great time and really enjoyed this ship and cruise. We love freestyle. I love not having to get fancy to go to dinner and to eat when I want and where I want. Freestyle worked well with an infant and we wouldnt do it any other way with small children.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food was great. We loved the choices (even among the free options). There are 3 buffets (the main large one and 2 smaller ones), all are located on deck 11 and are free. The buffets were great, we went there for a few breakfasts and lunches. The ice cream station was a plus! The Blue Lagoon (fast food/Applebees type) is free and was okay for lunch or late night snack. Room service menu is limited but free and convenient. We did this for breakfast a few times. The main dining rooms (Indigo and Summer Palace) were good. We didnt like everything we tried but we enjoyed trying new things. Some of the main courses and desserts really wowed us. We did Cagneys (surcharge steakhouse) once. The filet was good but not exceptional, not as good as Smith&Wollensky or RuthsChris.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We saw 3 shows, all were great. Sharkbait (juggling comedians), 2nd City Comedy (improv group) and David Nester (comedian). All funny, all the best shows we've scene on a cruise.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
We found the service to be good. The staff were very nice and friendly, especially to my infant son. We heard other guests complaining that NCLs service is not as good as other lines. We cannot compare the others but we think this may have to do with the freestyle concept. NCL is trying to foster a more relaxed atmosphere. If you want 24/7 fanny kissing, NCL is not for you. However, if good service and respect is enough then NCL delivers.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The Pearl is beautiful. The NCL crew take very good care of her and it shows. The ship is immaculate, well decorated, and well laidout. This is the 1st big ship weve been on and we think bigger is better when talking about the Pearl. The only complaint we had was the stateroom hallways are too small. It is difficult (and sometime impossible) to get wheelchairs and large strollers down the hall when steward carts and luggage are out. The ship has lots to do and plenty of comfy places to lounge both inside and outside, sunny and shaded.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We opted for cheap and got an inside room on deck 9, very quiet! The room was expectedly small but with great use of space and lots of storage (even under the beds). The beds were really comfy. The bathroom was a good size for a ship and the shower was roomy compared to other ship showers.

Pros: The food choices, the ship, and not having to cook or clean!

Cons: Embarkation and Disembarkation.
