Review summary

Trip got off to a rough start for the Cruise line would not allow my wife to board because they told her she lacked full documentation to board. Curious for after we left for the cruise, nobody asked to see our photo ID (passport) anywhere else including Canada. Norwegian asked we go home to get the documentation and their attitude was that my wife was a criminal and pay a $300 fine which my wife refused. I cannot say I can recommend Norwegian for I'm thinking the other cruise lines might have offered a solution that perhaps would have allowed my wife to go  while limiting her excursions to US Ports. All it would take is more thoughtful customer service and a willingness to go another step.  .

Trip itself was fine but I was alone on a ship while everyone else had their spouses with them which greatly depressed me.

Ship experiences

Cabin / Stateroom

Cabin was fine.

As long as one person learns from our misfortune, it was worth sharing. My wife got a nice Tanzanite necklace out of it so she's happier.

Screw off loser, this is an old convo and you need to find something more productive to do then comment on old posts..move on,oh maybe you should go back to school maybe one in common sence

sheenankhi    9 years ago

@tennisman you need to return to where you went to school to understand the difference between your & you're. The name calling alone makes you look like YOU'RE not grown enough to be on the message boards.

How unfortunate that your wife had to miss the cruise due to a lack of proper documents.  Now that you both know what is required, your future cruises should go smoother.

Cruise lines are bound by government requirements and must obey the laws as we have to do as individuals.  In this case, the law didn't allow them to permit your wife to board. I'm sure that they were not happy about the situation, either but their hands were tied.  They had no leeway; no other cruise line does either. Whether she got off the ship in ports or not was not the issue.  She needed the documents to board initially.  I understand how frustrating and upsetting this was for both of you but try to put this behind you and move on with your life.

Good day to you, sir!

tennisman1982    9 years ago

Im now done with you,I don't respond well to people whom think they know everything when in this case they don't...take care

tennisman1982    9 years ago

And clearly you had to google that..keep googling cause a visa is one that foreigners need, not Americans and that is the point I was making

A passport is a travel document. A travel visa is an official government document that temporarily authorizes you to be in the country you are visiting. Many countries require a visa to gain entry. The visa usually is in the form of a stamp or sticker placed IN the passport and is obtained from the country you are visiting. Google is your friend.

Tennisman1982 - have you even stepped foot outside the U.S? My guess is probably no place civilized if you travel with your birth certificate. Hugs and kisses.

zhenlee1    9 years ago

Just spoke with NCL and yes we are out for our ticket but get everything else back. Customer relations said this is treated like a cancellation and not covered by insurance.

tennisman1982    9 years ago

If you want to vent here that's your choice but my point is to make sure you have all your facts right before you do,it's not ncl to be upset with its the us customs regulations that gave you the issue and/or failure to supply documentation

tennisman1982    9 years ago

And your the one with assumptions assuming nil was at fault.my responses were all based on YOUR posts...if your passports are not valid you need an id AND birth certificate which is clearly stated with customs and on ncl website and your E docs..just make sure in the future you have everything correct.ncl people there are not rude and can't do anything to assist in this matter..

I like tennis man.

tennisman1982    9 years ago

If you were you would not have an issue

zhenlee1    9 years ago

As i said I just wanted to share and NCL could have handled this with far more tact and understanding. No need to be belligerent but it was our first cruise and I was miserable. FYI I am indeed a US citizen so lay off assumptions

tennisman1982    9 years ago

Point is..your putting fault on a cruise line that is following guidelines set by the United States customs therefore if you are not citizens of the us which clearly your not then you need to be sure to have the right documentation before you leave which obviously you did not

tennisman1982    9 years ago

And foreign passports are not accepted by customs..only a visa is and that's at their discretion ajxqxgouxiovmdszacmlrwjs8 you have no clue what your saying and should get the facts right before you post something like you have done

tennisman1982    9 years ago

My responses are facts and you need to get off your high horse and and stop blaming the cruise line for your own faults

zhenlee1    9 years ago

I'm the original poster for my cell phone ap says otherwise. I didn't post for sympathy but tennisman needs to get his high horse and stop being a ****. I just wanted to share and thanks to family fun

CrusinTim    9 years ago

I think your spinning your wheels zenlee. The fault here is NOT on the cruise line or boarding crew (who by the way have to follow customs regulations in order to allow you to board). The fault here is on your lack of planning. If you might have had the slightest idea that her documentation may become an issue, you should have addressed it to your travel/cruise agent or the cruise line itself WELL in advance of the cruise so you could have ironed out anything that needed to be done. What's done is done. Don't aggravate yourself any further because I see no favorable resolve in your future regarding this self-inflicted wound.

familyfun2015    9 years ago

she could have a passport from her own country which is just as valid as a u.s. passport. what do you think all those people from other countries on the ship are traveling with? obviously other things going on with this situation but this is a friendly web site, why not keep it friendly? . But for us happening to be born in U.S. it could be us with this issue.

tennisman1982    9 years ago

Oh and FYI...if she is not a us citizen then she can't have a valid passport only a visa which is why she had a problem..I would have done the same to her if I was a customers officer

tennisman1982    9 years ago

This is a us customs law,you did not supply correct documentation therefore were in the wrong..you can't do a thing about this since the fault is on you

zhenlee1    9 years ago

I'm going to speak with the higher ups for the staff on board and the workers have no authority to do anything but follow their instructions. We're going to ask we be credited for the money spent for next cruise

familyfun2015    9 years ago

they should not be rude. its not like people are all experienced travelers.

familyfun2015    9 years ago

oh so sorry you experienced that. a valid passport and drivers license should be adequate! I would maybe consider contacting customer service at ncl for resolution/ compensation. also you do know that you dont have to pay those automatic gratuity fees? I would fill out the form to get that back and instead tip your steward.

tennisman1982    9 years ago

tennisman1982    9 years ago

again it's customs law and I agree with why she was not allowed to board..if passport is not valid then a license AND birth certificate is required..you should have known this before you went on the cruise..check your facts before placing blame you fool..it's not a norwegian rule, iftsts us customs stupid

zhenlee1    9 years ago

she had a valid passport but she's not a US citizen but has been here since 1983. She offered them her Oregon drivers license which should be enough for you need full documentation to get that but Norwegian showed little sympathy and was quite rude during our trip with the exception of our steward who was a sweetheart.

tennisman1982    9 years ago

get your documents correct before you leave DUH!! and it's a customs law not cruise line

familyfun2015    9 years ago

BBC.co is a type o.

familyfun2015    9 years ago

I and my husband both used certified birth certificates and drivers license. we are u.s. citizens though. we were not allowed to go on any excursions to canada but we could get off in Victoria. the reason they dont ask for further documentation when getting off at port is because the cruise ship has already fully documented each passenger upon boarding. The only time you can bbc.co use a birth certificate is when the passenger is u.s. born and the trip is "closed loop" from u.s. and only stopping in canada , not other countries). its complex and they could change the rules any time so a passport is a better choice.

jans15    9 years ago

Your moment makes no sense?? Did she not go, hard to believe no passport in Canada? You have to have a passport on most crushes, if your leaving US

CrusinTim    9 years ago

A LOT of open holes in this review!!! What documentation was missing? Usually just a VALID passport and a VALID Government issued photo I.D. is all you need to board (and these are things you should have known prior to going to the dock)! Once the passport is entered into the ships system, in most cases it is not needed for presentation the rest of the cruise except maybe when going to places like the U.K.  Here's the BIG one....the cruise line has NO lawful authority to enforce paying a fine of ANY amount to board the ship so where is THAT coming from ???? It sounds to me when you state about limiting cruises to U.S. ports that she had a questionable passport which is not the cruise lines fault. I think there's more to this than your explaining. You left your wife behind is what I get from "Trip itself was fine but I was alone on a ship while everyone else had their spouses with them which greatly depressed me.". Your kidding...right?

The cruise line doesn't make up the documentation laws.
