Review summary

The last time I cruised on Holland America was 9 years ago on the Rotterdam on a 16 day South American cruise.

The deterioration in the quality of the cruise, from the food to the service to the entertainment to the educational presentations to the shore excursions, is very evident.

I thought Holland America was better than Celebrity in 2007.  Clearly, that is no longer the case.  I would put Holland America as a last choice in the middle market cruise category.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Nice presentation but tasteless. Even the prime rib roast was tough, definitely not prime beef as there was no marbling at all.

Entertainment

Only three nights out of the 14 were worth watching, given the age make-up of the market of HAL.

Service and Staff

The cabin crew was good, but the shore excursion manager was less than honest and truthful. He claimed he could not get back to me on an issue I raised because we were always out on port days. I thought that was the reason there was a voicemail messaging system to take care of that. I guess he did not know how to use the voicemail system onboard.

The blackout drapes do not overlap as they should, so sunlight gets in to the room and wakes you up very early even on sea days. Took the crew three days to give me some papers clamps I requested so I could clamp the drapes together.
