Review summary

We were charged additional fees of Gratuities on the ship of $117.70 per person, which was never mentioned in our booking details. We inquired about this fee on the ship and Royal Carribean refused to reverse these fees and told us our travel agent should have mentioned all mandatory fees. This fee was never mentioned by before and after I booked this cruise. The booking details stated full booking charge of only $900.75. This should have included all fees and charges. I do not think this is proper business practice by .

We just came back today from a 6 night cruise. I talked to customer service on a second night about canceling automatic gratuities , and we gave cash to the people that served us in the dining room and cabin. We had no problems.

Yes they do. That's what they did to us. Just to to customer service at any point during the cruise and they will refund

guyc83    8 years ago

We were on the allure in November and had no issues with them doing that

I apologize, but anyone who goes on a cruise reviews info about the cruise. Whether it's the ports, the ships, activities, etc. I find it extremely difficult to believe you had no clue about gratuities. And shame on you for expecting people to GIVE you a wonderful vacation with top notch service for nothing in return.

We tip cash to the people that actually serve us. The money the cruise line adds everyday you never know who actually gets it and the cruise line always keeps some which is wrong. So we cancel it on every cruise and just tip cash

I always pre pay my gratuities. On day one, when my cabin attendant brings my bags in, I give him 20.00. Then I go to meet the Concierges, I shake their hands with a 50.00 in my hand. I tip the servers/bartenders 2.00 for every drink. In speciality restaurants I tip the server 10.00. On the last day, I tip the wait staff 20.00 each, I tip my cabin attendant 50.00.

We have been on a few cruises, and always gave tips to waiters in the main dining room at the lest dinner and to a person that took care of our room at the lest night, additional to gratuity that they charge. Those people really deserved that. We didn't know that we could just cancel what they automatically charge. I wonder what people normally do. Do you guys usually just pay the gratuity through your account or add cash to people that actually served you on a cruise?

Just wondering...you indicate you have been on 4 - 6 previous cruises. Have you never had gratuities charged to your account on the past cruises?

I can understand being upset if you did not know about the auto charge tips.   I do feel that it is not rite to give a bad review to the cruise line and the ship staff due to an issue with your travel agent.   This is like having an issue with one of your tiers and saying the car is a piece of junk.  The issue is with your travel agent,  not the cruise line.  Also all cruise lines web sites state the amount of tipping that will be automatically billed to your card.  Some of the fault is with you for not doing research on the lines web site.  The on line travel site that I use even states the daily tips.

This review actually makes me angry. You should stay at home the rest of your life if you don't expect to compensate and adequately reward those who give you outstanding service.

Every cruise we've been on the cruise line and agency have been very upfront about gratuities. Either way, you shouldn't be upset about the gratuities. The service industry is a thankless job and very low wages. Those people work their a***s off to make sure you have a relaxing vacation. It's worth way more than $117 to me.

You can also go to customer service on board and cancel all gratuities like we did because we decided to give cash to our room attendants and our amazing waiter at dinner that we had.

This charge is on all ships, depending on your room size. shame on that travel agent that booked your cruise for not telling you and shame on you for not reading your booking documents. I hope you had a good time.

Depending on your type of cabin, there are fixed gratuities. You either pay them up front or RCL adds them to your account daily.
