Review summary

This was our first cruise at Christmas and the fellow passengers and families were fun and the atmosphere was so much better than same exact cruise in November 2022.

Embarkation

Embarkation went fast and was relatively easy. They used to have wheelchair assistance on 3rd level of parking garage by elevators but this cruise you needed to walk across ramp yourself from garage to building.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
When we sailed most of the food was still free and offered numerous venues all over the ship to enjoy. This spreads out the crowds even though there were 6,300 guests on board. We enjoy the food immensely except for the Lido Buffet which is pretty bad. There are bright spots on lido like the Sea Dog sausages, deserts and gelato. The 3 Street Eat venues offer tasting size items that change daily and I enjoyed a few of them. There are so many options you are bound to find something you like.

Pizzeria del Capitano

5 out of 5

The pizza was much improved this sailing. I’m not sure what they did but taste and quality was excellent. When the line was long during peak hours they had a person helping to expedite handing out the available pizza which made it go a little faster.

Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse

5 out of 5

The whole experience was excellent. The fee which includes gratuity even though they increased it is reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Steakhouses on land at this level of service and food are more than double the price. I had the shrimp cocktail, lamb chops, garlic mashed potatoes and apple tart. Everything was perfect except the apple tart puff pastry crust was chewy and I needed a knife to cut it. I highly recommend going to the steakhouse at least once. They have eliminated a few things that they did/had since before the pandemic but they were smart to change and not missed. They no longer show you the salts and cuts of meat which increases efficiency. The raspberry, strawberries and white chocolate were eliminated from cheesecake presentation.

Piazza Piani

5 out of 5

The variety and quality of the 12 sandwiches is excellent. I love the eggplant #8 and had it more than once. My daughter loves the tuna #2 and my husband raves about #12 which is similar to a Philly since I can’t remember the name.

BlueIguana Cantina

5 out of 5

We love the breakfast burritos but this was the first time having the lunch tacos. The chicken tacos are delicious and the taco shell is tasty and a good texture. The pork was not as tasty as chicken or fish.

Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse / Brewhouse

1 out of 5

Let me start by saying we did not eat here this trip. I went by on embarkation day to verify daily special and waiter acted like they never had daily specials when I saw pictures of them and this was my 3rd time on Mardi Gras. Was thinking of trying 1st night steak special which I guess was eliminated.

Cucina del Capitano

5 out of 5

There were 3 of us and we went to Cucina twice for dinner. We all shared appetizers and entrees to try everything. The pistachio pasta, beef short rib, cured tuna and veal Marsala were all delicious. We had more items and all were good.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Too many people and not enough seating or space to see shows. Shows are scheduled multiple times but unless you line up very early or grab a seat extremely early you won’t be able to see any.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
In general they are trying hard and mostly are doing a great job while being cordial and pleasant. I think the staffing needs to be increased to handle the increased passenger numbers.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
I’m sad to say I think they are still understaffed and are not as attentive to cleanliness as they once were. The common restrooms are not picked up as often as needed and attention to detail is lacking. In my room there were items that needed to be wiped that weren’t. The overall cleanliness of the ships has declined.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Balcony cabin in good location. This balcony is relatively private and people are not looking down on you. We personally like the wider rooms as compared to the new longer skinny cabins. Bathrooms in general are too small and I like the enclosed shower.

Ship tip

Read up on food options available. I met quite a few people who didn’t know about all the free/included dining venues.

Ports of call

Grand Turk Island

4 out of 5
You can walk off boat to free beach and free Margaritaville pool. They provide free bike rickshaws for tips only if you prefer not to walk. Chairs go fast at both beach and pool. The beach water is fantastic but you have to be prepared for extremely rocky uneven sea floor. Pool is crowded and water has floating debris. Margaritaville food was not great and is pricey.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

Traveler Photos

We got off the ship a little later than most and there was not a chair to be had by the pool and I waited in line to buy the all day wifi for $8 they were sold out.
