Review summary

Liberty from Galveston was only ok. It really lived up to the notion many have that Royal is boring. It was by far the most boring Royal sailing I have been on. To its credit, the MDR had some of the best food of any Royal I have been on and the service throughout the ship was superb. Winners included beef short rib that melted in your mouth, a well presented grilled fish dish, lamb shank and the oxtails in the buffet. I always order the Indian entree along with a regular one in MDR. It's a good flavor balance. This sailing had a higher proportion of seniors and I would recommend this ship for older passengers. Vast majority of passengers are older Texans so you don't have the geographic and international diversity that you find on the Florida sailings. Lots of yalls and howdys. Also this was the most dressed down crowd I have seen on formal nights. Suits were rare. Shorts and tank tops were not unusual on formal nights. Embarkation and security lines were slow. There were plenty of scanners and lots of staff. It was just not well organized as far as separation of duties. They need to bring in some process engineers. Disembarkation was not the worst but not the quickest. Seems a larger number of passengers in Galveston were traveling with birth certificates, so the border lines moved slowly. You have a family of 5 all with certificates takes time for agent to review. Also at disembarkation, they are more aggressive than other ports in trying to get you to pay taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. So don't exit with those in view. Pack in your luggage. This ship feels crowded most of the time. Oasis class ships feel a lot less crowded than Liberty even with more passengers. The cabin was roomy. Had balcony. Two electrical sockets. The night club "Olive or Twist" was a total yawner. The DJ was weak with awkward mixes and a stale playlist. The band at Boleros was good. The bar service is excellent. The theater entertainment was largely corny. A juggler, some singers. The female comedian was a riot--best entertainment they had. If there are younger people who like a decent night life, and are debating a Galveston sailing, you will probably have more fun on Carnival Vista. Better yet, head to Miami and Lauderdale for your cruise. Liberty out of Galveston is a total snooze cruise. But for seniors, I would highly recommend the Galveston sailings.
