Explorer of the Seas

9 Night Eastern Caribbean (Cape Liberty Roundtrip)

Sail date: August 25, 2006

Ship: Explorer of the Seas

Cabin type: Suite

Traveled as: Family (young children)

Review summary

The ship had lots of different activities and shows. The food was good with a wide selection of choices each day. Could have been a bit cleaner. Often the pool area was littered with used glasses, cigarette butts, and various trash. Unlike other ships that include basic tipping in the charge, this cruise line expected guests to tip everyone and their mothers. Our family of 5 was expected to contribute over 600.00 during our 9 day cruise (not including gratuities for drinks, extra services, and excursion guides). Airport vouchers were a rip-off. They cost 25.00 per person and you stand in the same line for a taxi as the people without vouchers paying 14.00 at the gate.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Pizza, mini sandwiches, and a very basic room service menu were always available. The buffet was excellent with pretty good hours.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Great shows and a wide variety of bars. Great casino. Very limited hours for ice skating, rock wall, in-line skating, and the children's pool slide. You had to pay to play the mini-golf. Arcade costs were outrageous. Not enough specials offered for the spa. No price list available up front.

Children's Programs

3 out of 5
The ship had great facilities for the kids. However, it was often way too crowded and noisy with the kids not really doing much beyond running wild under supervision.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Most of the staff were friendly and courteous but only a couple ever went that extra mile.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Size, decor, and ammenities were great. However, they could have done a better job in keeping things clean. Often had wrappers and leftover drinks scattered in the hallway to our room left by other untidy guests.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Staterooms were adequate size. However, there were very few TV selections, no VCR/DVD availability, and poor in-room movie selection. The room attendant was very friendly and effecient but we never had any little towel animals waiting for us and the chocolates were just left in a pile by the tv.

Pros: Great food and lots of activities

Cons: Lots of hidden charges, terrible tendering policy
