Review summary

I enjoyed the Princess Discovery Ship as much as I did the Alaska excursions. I felt very pampered. I did get a wonderful massage and facial at Lotus Spa. Enjoyed the buffet everyday and gelato quite a bit too. My husband loved the fitness center. We enjoyed meeting new people. Highly recommend this cruise. I had foot surgery in January and debated about bringing my scooter. You will do a lot of walking. Bring a wheelchair if you need it.

Embarkation

Long lines but well organized. Considering the size of the crowd the week before Memorial Day holiday, maybe took about 20-30 minutes to get onto ship. Having the Medallion and passport makes it easy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Many healthy food choices. Loved the fresh fruit, salad choices, and many types of fresh baked breads. None of the foods were salty. We mainly ate at the Worldfresh Marketplace buffet. So much variety from different parts of the world. The desert choices were great too! We tried Gigi’s Pizzeria via room service. It was fabulous! International Cafe was very good for a snack or light meal. We loved the Gelato station a number of nights!

Onboard Activities

I signed up for the Barre Pilates class. It was quite challenging but doable. The recumbent bikes are first class. I especially enjoyed the competitive race on one. Love the fitness center. It’s got everything a great gym has and a super view. We sat in the deck chair by the pool and hot tub. Someone spotted a whale. I saw a professional ice sculptor on the deck.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Enjoyed a live band in the Piazza. Horns, piano, drums-great sound. There were lots of shows but we just didn’t see them. After excursions, dinner, and gelato we were ready to relax in the stateroom and watch the ocean and movies.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our room steward, Billy, gave A+ service. Was anticipating every need. Very sincere and respectful. The baristas in International Cafe were fantastic but overworked. There were no nondairy creamers in dining room or in room service so I had to visit this station or the one by Worldfresh Marketplace. Either deck 5 or deck 16. There was one other on deck 7 but that barista was not friendly. We found the waiters who bring you water or coffee to pass you by while you had food in Worldfresh Marketplace buffet. This was annoying! All other personnel were very friendly and helpful. Especially in Lotus Spa

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It’s a beautiful new ship. Everything was clean. Bathrooms well sanitized. See crew cleaning constantly.

Cabin / Stateroom

We had the mid deluxe balcony in aft. It was very quiet except for hangers in closet which my husband removed. At first I thought it was too small. But it worked great. Loved our balcony. Bathroom was great. We had walk-in shower, elevated toilet, and sink plenty big. There is a plug in outlet in bathroom and 2 in main room. Closet/drawers more than ample for lots of clothes. Billy our room steward kept it very clean.

Disembarkation

I missed the free luggage transport from ship to airport. I tried to pay for luggage in advance and couldn’t figure it out. So I forgot to turn the form in on time. But it wasn’t a problem as you leave your luggage outside your cabin night before and they sit it by customs walk through. I had a porter push it thu and done.

I know the barista you speak of on Deck 7. We were on the Discovery in March for Mexico and will be back on her in 5 days to Alaska. We plan on avoiding that barista. He was simply overworked, overwhelmed and his demeanor showed it. The only time he would be friendly is when an officer was there.
