Review summary

I suffered a staph strep B severe infection from the hot tub on the Celebrity Silhouette. The emergency doctor and specialist both had the opinion that this infection and a herpes diagnosis came from the hot tub I used late one night on the ship.

I sent a complaint letter by registered mail to Celebrity head office a week after being diagnosed.  Three months of follow up, including with the assistance of my travel agent, resulted in absolutely no response from Celebrity until I took to their social media pages and warned others.

In my opinion, a top notch cruise line would offer a minimum of a refund of the cost of the cruise simply because of their lack of response to my complaint.  On top of that they ignored my doctors report and are happy to have us, Canadians, come to Miami to sue them.

BE WARNED - this is how Celebrity operates, they think that they are safe from legal action from Canadians because most won't spend the money to sue in the US so they can deny any responsibilities for international passengers.

I have been on many cruises including Celebrity and they have always been top notch in my books. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience.

A soak in the hotel hot tub after a hard day's skiing or shopping and sight-seeing may sound relaxing - but before you get too comfortable, keep in mind who - or what - is in there with you. Two US experts have warned of a whole host of horrible, and in some cases dangerous, creatures lurking below the water surface. I personally never use t as I know that that is a pool of germs

I dont think that they should refund you the whole cost of the cruise....maybe some kind of compensation, but not the whole cruise, after all, it was you who chose to get in that hot tub...,

It is possible but it was my understanding that the spas are drained and sanitized every day. The problem with most are microbes blown out into the water when jets are first turned on. It doesn't seem that those sit dormant long enough...unless it wasn't cleaned but I would expect others to have suffered as well? The post just didn't ring true IMO.

Also herpes.org says it's extremely rare to contract through a pool or hot tub due to the chlorine and the fact that you have to have an open wound for it to enter. I'd never get in a hot tub if I had any breaks in my skin.

Yeah I think if it was the hot tub they'd have a lot more people diagnosed and the CDC would be investigating.

Woo. Knowledge..maybe she meant both and just short cut diagnosis. My question to you ...can you not get that in a hot tub..?? Don't the sanitizing they do each !morning kill bacteria etc ? Just curious now

No such thing as a Staph Strep B....it's either a Staphylococcal infection or Streptococcal Group B infection which are bacterial and the herpes is viral. Pretty damn good epidemiology to narrow it down to the hot tub? Sorry but I do this sort of work for a living and it doesn't quite mesh.
