Review summary

Wonderful, fun, exciting first cruise celebrating the anniversary of our friends!

Embarkation

Very easy! I got there a little bit earlier than my time (I was with half of my group who had a slightly earlier time) and they let me embark with them. It was simple and easy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Overall, great food on the ship. There was one night where they didn't have any non-dairy desserts on the menu other than fruit. They were able to make a last minute accommodation but it would have been nice to have another option. Also, I was waiting to have waffles or pancakes until the last day at sea (they had them on the days in which we were in Grand Turk & Amber Cove). All that was available on the last day at sea was the ricotta pancakes (which I couldn't eat) & the 12 hr french toast (which a friend tried earlier in the trip & didn't like). I wished that the waffles/pancakes were available on the last sea day. Other than that everything else was great. Favorites: The turkey sandwiches on pretzel bun @ deli were amazing! Pasta at the pasta place was great! Chia Seed pudding in the dining hall was a favorite. Also the drinks on the ship were all great! Loved the shots at dinner - it was really fun. One of my favorite drinks was the Agave Pineapple Tea @ the Tequila Bar.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Trivia Nights (90's & Country), Karaoke, Art Auction, Country Night @ Limelight Lounge, Serenity Deck. They were all very enjoyable (especially the Karaoke, Serenity deck & country night) except the 90's "Trivia Night" and the Art Auction were not. The 90's trivia night in the Sunrise Lobby was not really trivia AT ALL. It was who could sing the song the loudest/competition between two sides of the lobby. We were pretty disappointed as this was not trivia. Also, the art auction was interesting but they said it would be an hour/hour & 15 mins and it ended up being over 2 hours. A lot of people left early and my friends won a mystery prize & a grand prize on the wheel before hand and it ended up being a lanyard and an extra small print. It was a big waste of time on our last day on the ship. Also, they didn't do any of the raffles until about an hour and half into the auction.

Entertainment

We didn't go to any stage shows. The violinists in the sunrise lobby were amazing. The DJ's were great.

Children's Programs

4 out of 5
The child in our group was a part of the kids club and I often went up with her & her parents to drop her off. The staff was great and the facilities looked so cute. I wish there had been more toys for the little ones. However, loved seeing the drawings/art she came back with and the face paint (which she loved). The check in staff person on the first day didn't really seem as knowledgeable about how things worked in the actual rooms (I forget the specific example, sorry). The other times, it was a different person and she was really great. Also, the kids movies on the big screen on the lido deck were really fun.

Service and Staff

Our room steward Richard was so amazing. he really helped us out with a bathroom situation and was very approachable & friendly when we would see him throughout the halls. We loved our waiters in the dining room - Randolf (he was the best!! He was so kind, really took care of us - especially those in the group with eating restrictions and he was just so personable & nice), Shervon (he was really great too) & Moises were all so helpful. I also really appreciated the guy who came to separate our beds on the first night. We had asked for 2 twins and not 1 king bed. It was not taken care of when we arrived. We called and they said they would come during the muster drill to take care of it. No one came. So we had to call at 11:00 at night! This guy came right out and took care of the beds. He was very kind and I enjoyed talking with him. He made the experience of this a little easier. (I wish I remembered his name!). Everyone else on the ship was really helpful, except for the people who were running the clearance sale. I still don't think there was a piece of jewelry that was priced right and the girl was trying to convince me it was and had kind of an attitude about it. It had a printed price with a barcode on the inside and nothing else (no red strike through any part of the tag), so I thought the printed price was the original price. She said it was the sale price and pointed towards another style of the item with a tag on the outside of the package that had a much higher price. She was trying to tell me that the price on the inside of the package (with the barcode) was the sale price. But, I still don't understand how all the items had two prices and the one with the actual barcode was the sale price. It still doesn't make sense to me. Especially since everything else on the whole table had red handwritten prices on it. I didn't like my interaction with her at all. Lastly, Henrique at Carnival Adventures really took care of us. We got screwed over on our Grand Turk excursion and we really felt like he had our backs in a not great situation. We really appreciated his help.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Everything was pretty great in the cabin. We did have an issue with our toliet a couple times towards the end of the trip. The button to flush wouldn't even work or you would press it and 5 minutes later it would flush. Other than that everything was great. One thing we did was actually move the end tables to different positions in the room so that we could separate the beds a little farther so that there was more space for us in our cabin.

Ship tip

If you want to lay out on one of the lounge chairs, get there EARLY in the day to lay out. If you try to find something in the afternoon when its nice and sunny, its very challenging!

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

5 out of 5
Port was easy to get in and out of with the help of shuttles. I did not realize that transportation in and out of the port would be an issue, so I ended up doing the Everglades excursion at the end so that I would have transportation back to the airport. That would have been helpful to know ahead of time that this is an issue (like in the trip planning info).

Grand Turk Island

The port itself was really nice. We tried to do this open air tram tour excursion. It got overbooked by a lot of people and when we got there to check in, not only did they tell us this but also, that the excursion had already left! They then told us that there would be a second tram to come take us in an hour. We showed up the hour later and no one was there. We finally saw a few other people that had been told the same thing and were waiting. We found Henrique, who told us that this information we got from the excursion staff had been wrong. There was never a second tram. So he graciously put us on a different excursion and price matched it but we had to wait another hour to go on the excursion. Once we got on the tour guide was great but we barely got any time at the stops, and our beach time at the end was pretty short. In addition (& this was completely beyond anyone's control) when we were at Governors Beach, they were taking apart the shipwrecked boat on the shore with the help of a crane that was beeping the entire time! By the time we finally did the excursion and made it back to the port - our day was over. We had to go back to the ship. We hardly had anytime at the beach (which we wanted to get in the water more) and had to basically sit around and wait all day. It was really not a great situation and we didn't really get to enjoy our time here.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

5 out of 5
Loved Amber Cove & Puerto Plata. We didn't do an official excursion but we took a taxi to one of the beaches in Puerto Plata. The taxi driver was wonderful and was so mindful of getting us back in time and making sure we had what we needed. The port was nice and the island was so beautiful and the music and people were wonderful.

Disembarkation

Very easy! I disembarked with my Everglades Excursion group and they helped us off the boat and into the customs line. The line was LONG by the time we got there but it was moving pretty quickly. We waited about 45 mins (maybe?) to get thru the line but there wasn't a lot of just standing still.
