Review summary
Overall the cruise was good. Stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel were wonderful. Our Barrier reef snorkel was cancelled and had to do another snorkel trip-wasn't as good. Lost air conditioning for a few hours in our room. Had to contact guest services for information. Announcements made on ship are impossible to hear if you are in your room or any other room of the ship. Food is sub par. The $64.75 per person gratuity at the end of the trip was a surprise.

Disappointing cruise
Food poor. Waited 1 1/2 hours to eat dinner
on open list. Last night 3 hours to eat.
Casino smoke filled with rude staff.
Excursions not worth the money.
Loud notices last 2 nights... All night.
Entertainment high school quality and no show
on Thursday ... 4th night of 5 day cruise.

Gratuities are always added on for a cruise. Also announcements are not broadcasted into cabins so as not to disturb passengers who are trying to sleep.

I don't find it shocking about a first time cruiser getting shell-shocked at the sight of the final bill -- I figure they were too excited about their first cruise to read all the fine print (that nobody reads anyway).
I do find it shocking when someone who claims to have been on many cruises complains about it.

Seems you had an OK cruise but I just want to point out some things that may help you understand a bit better. It is not uncommon for mechanical issues to occur as did with your air conditioning especially on a ship that is 18 years old. The announcements are not broadcast in the cabins as to not inconvenience the passengers. Nothing worse than being asleep at 7am and being awoken by an announcement about a bingo tournament. The only time you will hear announcements in your cabin is when it is imperative for the guests to be advised of an issue on the ship or a change of itinerary. The auto-gratuities are actually charged at the time of booking the cruise so you can challenge the charges onboard if you receive poor service. Check your first bill from when you booked. Auto-gratuities are common on 98%of cruise lines. Hope this helps for your future cruises ;)
I find it amazing how many people that complain about the gratuities find it shocking when it shows up on their final cruise invoive.
